A Different Cause for a Tournament

Seems like so many tourneys are happening these days! Tony Stevens contacted me with another opportunity to get involved. This one is a nationwide APBA GO tourney. This is what he sent me.

Another Month, Another APBA Tournament.

Well another tournament attended and played. One bottom of the 9th dice roll away from winning it all, and had fun in the books. Jim Saska put on another solid enjoyable Richmond (Old Dominion) tournament. The next tournament I will be participating in will be the one I direct — Thx for the Baseball Memories which starts on January 1st and is played over the internet using camera programs such as Zoom. Not sure how many of these I have organized, but it must be around four or five. Anyway, it’s a fun tournament that lasts about four to six weeks. It’ a tribute to those former major leaguers who passed away in 2023 such as Sal Bando, Brooks Robinson, and others.

I have penciled in Steve’s Chattanooga Shootout in mid-February, but do I want to drive the 5.5 hours there, through the Smoky Mountains during February? And then back again?  Of all the tournaments I have attended, Steve’s has the best food — and if there is one thing about APBA I know it is food.Yet, even that tournament is just another tournament — fun and enjoyable, but it’s just a hobby to pass the time.

Surely, there has to be something more…

A Different Type of Tournament

Wait, what’s this on the Delphi’s Between the Lines Regional Board? APBAGO Nationwide Virtual Tournament. Not my cup of tea … or should I say shaker of dice, but once again, it will occupy my time with a hobby I enjoy. Truthfully, the “Nationwide” tag got me. Maybe I can be part of the first 100 team tournament. That would be something different for sure.

Who is Chester? Never heard of him. Sure … why not? It will be fun for a bit. Hey wait! He is charging $20/entry. Sheesh. Kinda steep for an APBAGO tournament. Oh my, now this is great. He will be using the money to help other APBA players who are going through a difficult financial time because of medical or job struggles. I’m in. There are many things I drop $20 on that I really don’t need, but to do this, to play some APBA knowing my money is going to help other players during a time when they could use the help is a worthwhile cause in my books. Hopefully, this will be the largest APBA tournament ever and hopefully this tournament will happen every year. Thx for this tournament, Chester! You can count on my participation.

I know Tony by reputation so I am posting this for him. Read the Delphi – Between the Lines forum thread if you want more information. Good luck, Chester and Tony!

Thomas Nelshoppen

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

One Comment:

  1. Chester thought this out quite well and talked about it extensively for us. Here’s to a hugely successful tournament!
