Sunday night mish-mash

Just playing catch-up on a few things:

APBA Mel

Mel M was so happy he got his 2012 Master Card set he sent a photo.  Thanks, Mel!

- if you’re on Facebook, Dom Provisiero has initiated another one of his APBA Roll Calls.  I love that Dom does these.  They’re simple but it gets everyone back in touch with each other.  During these roll calls, folks usually note their hometown and invariably at least once each time, someone will find out there is a nearby person that plays APBA.  Here is the link if you want check in.  As of now, there are 58 people who have posted.

- I got an email to call a reader of the blog named Jim Shaw the other day so I rang him up.  Once on the phone, we were chatting like old friends.  Nothing more to say except that the bond of APBA and baseball do run deep.  I was talking to a complete stranger who was hundreds of miles (and tens of degrees, mind you) away from me.  Yet, we shared something in common that allowed us to communicate on a great level.

Thanks Jim!

-Finally, this isn’t APBA related but perhaps interesting to a few of you.  I was interviewed by Chris Webb of B1G Baseball on the other great love of my life… Illini Baseball.

The APBA Blog Dice Shaker Project

ial weekendjune 025Dice shakers… most of us who play the tabletop version of APBA use them.  However, I’m wondering how many of us use the APBA-issued yellow dice shakers that come with the game.  Do any of you roll with different shakers or cups or perhaps modify the APBA shakers somehow?  Perhaps you use a custom-built stationary roller.  Or maybe you even have one of the original cardboard APBA dice cups made years ago.

I know in the Illowa APBA League, some of us use standard issue shakers, some have made their own (I received a couple from my industrious friend Brando that are quite nice) and others have used modified other cups to use as shakers.  I once even printed out a photo of my team’s franchise player, Albert Pujols, and glued it on to a dice cup just to instill fear into my opponents (it didn’t work).

The APBA Blog Dice Shaker Project is born

So to explore this further, I’d thought I’d try something different.  A multimedia project that involves you, the fans of APBA.  I’m calling it the APBA Blog Dice Shaker Project.  It simply involves you, the APBA fan, sending me a creative photo of your favorite dice shaker.  Once I get enough, I’ll put them all together in a graphical collage or gallery and post them for everyone to see.

The Process

IMAG01271.  How will you send me your photo of your dice cup or shaker?

There are a couple ways you can do this.  If you are already a fan of The APBA Blog on Facebook, you can upload it to the fan page.  If you’re not on Facebook, that’s ok.  I’ve set up a form page that will allow you to upload a photo (note the form page accepts jpgs and gif files that are 2mb or less).

2.  If there’s a story behind your cup/shaker, let us know about it.  On Facebook, just leave your tidbit with status field the photo.  I’m also including a text field in the web contact form so feel free to let us know what story is behind it.

3.  Most importantly, feel free to be creative and humorous with your photos and/or stories.  Maybe take an action shot while rolling.  Or perhaps posing next to your favorite player’s card.  Also, I don’t mean to exclude the BBW guys so heck, if your computer keyboard/mouse is APBA-themed, include it!  Have fun with it.

Once a few weeks have gone by, I’ll most likely assemble the photos and stories  into a slideshow so we all can see it.  I will most likely put them all on the Facebook photo album as well as a SmugMug gallery.

This certainly isn’t a competition or contest. The idea behind this is just to have a little fun.  I honestly don’t know where this is going but I think I’m going to enjoy the ride.

I’m looking forward to seeing your photos!

Generations

by Jeff Papas

This week I’m performing a child’s most difficult duty — saying goodbye to a parent.

My father passed away on Sunday night and while I spend time with family, we’re sharing memories.  One of those memories concerns APBA.

My dad was a baseball fan, though not a huge one.  He followed the old Minneapolis Millers back in the day, and transferred that allegiance to the Twins when they moved to Minnesota in 1961.

He took me to my first game at the old Metropolitan Stadium, when I was five years old in 1970.  I remember we lost to Baltimore — but back then, didn’t everybody? and I was hooked on both the game and my idol, the late Harmon Killebrew.

Three years later, we were playing APBA.  My dad was my first opponent.

He let me take the Twins and he played Oakland, using the 1973 card set.  That meant he had the World Champions and so, perhaps he was a little bit bigger fan than I gave him credit for.

It was a great pitching matchup – Bert Blyleven against Vida Blue.  And neither of us could score.  Each pitcher went nine innings in a 0-0 tie, at which point I figured Bert was getting tired and pulled him from the game.

I ran through my entire bullpen, while Dad stayed with Blue.  Through the tenth.

The eleventh.

The twelfth.

The thirteenth.

Each inning I’d ask him, hinting, “Dad, don’t you think Blue is a little tired?”

“Nope,” he’d answer, with an easy smile.  I’d then go down 1-2-3.

For the record, Oakland won that game 2-0 — in 16 innings. Blue pitched a complete game and gave me exactly five hits.  I still have the scoresheet someplace.

Dad liked to win.  But now as I get ready to say goodbye to him, I’m realizing that the beauty of baseball as passed from father to son is very, very special.

If you like, please share your memories of your dad and any sport – baseball or any other.  And then, if he’s still with you, go give him a hug.  While you can.

The Great APBA Fan Survey: Follow-up

Yesterday, I finally posted the last set of results from The Great APBA Fan Survey.  If you missed any, I’m putting links to each set below so you can check them out.

A few final comments and acknowledgements

First, I would like to thank everyone for participating.  The response was greater than I expected. I guess it shows that no matter what our opinion is on one topic or another, we certainly want to be heard.  Speaking of being heard, I can tell you that John Herson from the APBA Company HAS been paying attention to the survey results so I hope that something good can come from this other than just idle curiosity.

Also, I want to thank those who helped by making suggestions and helpful tips in setting up the survey.  It was greatly appreciated.

This was my first time doing a survey of any sort and of course, as time went by I realized there were some things I might do differently and certain questions popped up that I wished I had asked.  I tried to stay from personal questions but perhaps it might have been nice to ask people’s gender.  Are there any women APBA players out there?  I’m sure there are.

Other questions that came to mind after it was too late:

  • Have you ever encountered cheating of any sort playing APBA?
  • Do you ever play APBA with your spouse/significant other?
  • For those in keeper leagues, have you ever found yourself rooting against your favorite MLB team when your league pitcher is on the mound (or up to bat)?

I might make this survey a annual event so keep an eye out next spring for the Second Annual Great APBA Fan Survey.

Here are the links to all the posts with survey results

The Great APBA Fan Survey: Final Comments from you

In the Great APBA Fan Survey the last section allowed you to type any comments you wanted about the survey, The APBA Blog, or the APBA Company.  I’m simply copying them wholesale so you can read them.

APBA needs to pick up the pace or get left behind.

Good survey – I hope you get many responses.

When APBA made major changes in their boards, that was a big improvement. It’s a much better game now.

Excellent blog, keep it going. Love the game, give ownership a chance

The key to APBA success is getting kids involved. For every one kid that gets turned on to the game, 2-4 more will be referred.

been a part of my life since i was 14 and would hate to think what it would be like without it.

I’d like to go to one of the conventions someday but being disabled living on social security thats kind of doubtful.

If the company thrives, I will be happy, but right now just seeing it survive is the best I’m hoping for. I don’t know if the D&C generation will eventually die off and it will be all computerized, but the company has to do what is best to survive and maybe even grow. Frankly and personally, the Basic game + Ballstat+Baseball reference are all gifts from God for me, as are my family and friends.

great idea

I love the idea of a regional convention, maybe a 1-day marathon tournament. That would be great.

Some of the questions could have had options where if you didn’t play in a league for example, you could have said so , or skipped the question.

Love the blog, Tom. Fun to spend time around like-minded people. I wish there were more local players to allow me some FTF time but on the whole, APBA has been a big part of my gaming life and will remain so into the foreseeable future.

I enjoy playing the game. I took a sabbatical for many years while raising kids but have rejoined APBA with a vengeance. It’s really enjoyable to roll games and learn about baseball history.

Illowa League Rules!!!!!!!

APBA Baseball releases of World Series matchups with two teams from each decade. (ie 1903, 1913, 1923 etc through 2003..then the next release would be 1904, 1914 etc through 2004 etc etc) in each release

Your blog is terrific! Keep up the great work! Richard

I’m interested in modifications to the baseball game. Is there a way to post them? I’m interested in all-decade teams for 70s &80s, is tht possible?

APBA Blog > keep up the good work of getting people involved APBA> keep on, keepin on

My biggest concern is product quality. I am interested in older seasons or special sets (Negro League Japanese even minor- how about a WBC set) but won’t purchase anything besides the current season unless the card stock and print quality improve.

It was a little long.

Maybe a section to ask or talk about special projects or greatest accomplishments. Otherwise good survey.

This is a great survey to gauge how engaged the APBA community is. Thanks for putting this together and keep up the great work on your blog. I love reading it every week!

i just wish i had the time to play it 24 hours a day (wife and 2 young kids will keep that from happening!)

MAKE THE BBW SO YOU CAN PLAY ONLINE

Day in and day out,’ Tedd gets the dice.

Need to hammer with advertising (like strat is doing with Sports Illustrated and Sporting News)

I think APBA is on the right track as long as mr.Herson continues to listen to what the fans want, and keep the passion for the co. I think the APBA blog is awesome, very refreshing, represents the average gamer.

after working all day, rolling a couple of games of my season helps me unwind. I enjoy apba and it is my lifetime hobby. It would take me a couple of lifetimes to do all the seasons I would like. The apba blog is super, keep up the good work,I read it frequently. thanks,dw

Love the Blog

I have been playing APBA for over 40 years and loving it. It’s my true hobby. Played out 1930 AL Lefty Grove went 32-1 8 shutouts and the same 2.54 era as in real life. How can I ever stop playing. Ed Huskey.

You do a great job with the APBA blog. I enjoy raeding it at least three times each week.

Curious to see what the results will be

Good survey. There seems to be an increase in popularity. Now is the time to promote strongly.

Good stuff!! Glad you did this.

Nothing to add. Good job.

Hard to improve Master Baseball, there’s a glitch or two, but it just feels right, and obviously not a computer, which adds to its charm. It SHOULDN’T be exact. Soccer is addicting, but there is considerable room for improvement. I worked my butt off to make a proper homebrew version, and while it was fun to take on the project … a 60+ year old company should have put out a more finished product. Cards and dice are more fun than computers. Thinking of trying Golf this summer

BBW is the future of APBA. It needs to be be updated, keeping all those things that made it attractive, including radio broadcast, but fixing things like l/r splits, park effects, and the other bugs. Dice roll option and card image would keep old timers on board

Making options to have a quicker game available would probably help in getting the younger generations involved. Not to mention if there was a way to play online. Maybe follow Steam’s lead ( maker of various MMORPG ) and put out a basic product that can be modified by the end user to their tastes. Allowing for various derivatives to suit certain needs or preferences.Maybe even use Kickstarter to get the online or electronic versions going allowing those that contribute a version either free or discounted depending on their level of participation.

We are lucky to have this amazing hobby and be able to share it amongst a great group of guys.

The reprints and new cards are confusing not knowing which is which being sold

thanks for doing this, I’ll be curious to see the results.

Thanks for the effort!

Nice quick survey, will be interested in the outcome

APBA Baseball has been a enjoyable hobby for me. Helps me relax and have had alot of fun in our league which is the DUBL and all the friends I’m made in the league.

thanks for taking the time to conduct this survey.

It’s a great game.

I’d love to see more writers join the APBA Blog, writing on various topics about the games, with more variety of sports. Also, maybe some metrics/card creation discussion, information on replays, and leagues. The current APBA blog really reminds me of the APBA Journal, but would love to see even MORE content! Though to be fair, I think what you do accomplish with the limited time and resources you have is phenominal. I check in nearly every day for updates and love the monster card monday discussions.

Great Blob – hope you are able to continue it for some extended period of time.

When dealing with league play, there should be the choice I do not do league play for each of these style questions.

I really like the APBA Blog. In my opinion, this is the real successor to the APBA Journal. Although I view the BTL forum some, it’s negativity is very off-putting.

Thanks for setting it up, Tom, good job!

Good survey. Nice selection of questions and themes.

Thanks for offering it up

thanks

there was no room for past performance. ive been in multiple mail leagues thru years but questions were currently oriented. almost every question could use a write in ‘other’

This was interesting. make sure we see the results

Great survey. Like the way APBA Company is headed.

I really like what you are doing with the APBA Blog! Maybe start making it more like the old APBA Journal with articles and such? I’d be glad to help!

Thanks for the survey and for the APBA Blog.

I really enjoy the APBA Blog was pleased to take part in your survey.

VERY entertaining & informative site! Keep up the Good Work! Best, Rick D

APBA has brought a lot of enjoyment to my life for many years. I have made a lot of good friends through APBA.

Fun survey. I was sorry to see APBA move from Lancaster since it was a half hour away from my house, but I like direction the company is going with the season reprints.

Constructive comments on blogs such as BTL are ok; but negative, finger pointing comments against the company and other posters needs to stop.

I’ve been playing in a face-to-face football league for more than 20 years and early summer (when the cards/player ratings come out) is one of the highlights of my year! I’m happy with what appears to be a return to good business fundamentals by APBA. I just wish the constant complainers on the chat room would cut them a little slick. Some people bitch about everything! On another note, I just became aware of this blog. I’d love to read more posts analyzing the cards (when they come out), and sharing ideas for game modifications, league structures, free agency systems, etc. My league is always open to new ideas.

Keep up the good work guys! Both APBA and this blog. Real P.

Love the APBA blog, and the ’1 for 5′ sites. Just started getting back into APBA over the last few months and those sites have become regular stops. Also, I have been very impressed with the APBA online community. I’ve received tremendous help and advice on my 1930 replay. There seems to be some very nice people playing APBA.

Greatest hobby on the planet. A tremendous group of guys. I have made some deep friendships because of this hobby, (although not in the ibilical sense.)

I am new to APBA, but I have been a tabletop sports gamer for years. I was attracted to APBA by the enthusiasm and loyalty of the APBA gamers. I think the new owner gets attacked for no real reason and people need to give the guy a chance. Also…you have a GREAT blog. Not just good, it is GREAT.

Hope the survey helps…just play the soccer game now and hope they get the bugs out of it before something else comes along…..it is at a crossroads.

Great idea to do this. the company has a ways to go but is on the right track short term.

How the hell was RA Dickey a 9z? 3.28 era with over 200 innings??? I know that he was on the last place Mets, but that was highway robbery!

keep up the good work! 66s!

interesting and will look forward to you publishing the results.

MAKE THE CARDS EASIER TO READ. MOST OF THE GUYS WHO PLAY YOUR GAME DONT SEE AS WELL AS WE USED TO.

Nice survey. Some of the questions I would answer differently because I used to be in multiple leagues and did play through the mail. Also you may want to include stuff about people being commissioners of leagues because I was one of those also.

it’s a great time-tested product and community and we need to make sure we pass on this heritage to the younger generation somehow

Thank you for the soccer game.

Great survey. Thanks!

Excellent survey. Questions have been well thought out. Hope to see you at the convention in July.

Fun survey. Thanks. Hope there are some good suggestions that get into the hands of the right people and not people just bitching that the computer game needs updated. I don’t play it, and would consider buying if there was an updated one…but I’m pretty happy with my one league, basic dice playing for now.

I would love to see you get the bbw products out faster than what you are doing. This 6.0 upgrade is ridiculous. Its taking to long

The survey was very interesting, and brought up to me some points that I can really think about.

Great survey and I will ge awaiting the results

Great idea,enjoyed the survey.

APBA could have really used a PR guy during the past year.

Keep up the good work!

Besides my earlier suggestion regarding pitching fatigue ratings, APBA should also simplify the master game, incorporate righty-lefty matchup ratings, and not make stealing automatic (dice throws, factoring in the runner’s stolen base ability, pitcher’s move to first, and the catcher’s throwing arm).

Would like to see a new 6.0 version of the baseball for windows with new updated features, but still have the same features we have now (Wizard, encyclopedia, or something similar.

Thanks for asking. APBA has been a big part of my life since 1965, and I want it to continue.

Love the APBA Blog… hit it 3-4 times a week. Found some very useful mods and tips and generally the positive attitude.

Thanks for including me!

If you go to Between the Lines I am the guy who posts the decade GTOP tournaments—GOTT (Glory of Their Times my favorite baseball book)

Enjoyed it!

Quit issuing old seasons that some of us old times collected years ago.. Protect the ones that made you!!! I’ve offered my insight many, many times but have never EVER been contacted!! Without your foundation, you are destined to fail…. Please listen to the veterans of APBA!!! Tim Palmer stout4me@bellsouth.net

None.

Thanks for providing the survey. Getting to community involved is the best way to spread the knowledge of the game and to get ‘pulse’ of the community.

Glad to see the company is still kicking. Need to get the new ‘Magnolia’ course for golf, live in Augusta and am going to the Masters tomorrow…woohoo. I love getting the new cards, though work and family pressures have eliminated a lot of my time for APBA. I used to always play a few games with my dad, but he has recently in the past couple of years lost interest due to health and other reasons. The game is a part of me, my past, my childhood, it even helped me in math…imagine that…so many statistics calculations done by hand…replaying the 1970 baseball season. Please keep it up and good luck in Atlanta, welcome to GA.

I love the blog, it is a daily stop for me, keep up the great work!!!

I will looking forward to the new BBW

good job!

Random thoughts: The PRN-9 strikeout vs. an ‘A’ pitcher is the coolest result in the game. … I’d like to see the Horse Racing game re-issued. … I’d like to see APBA stop re-issuing the same baseball sets over and over and over again. Who doesn’t own 1964RRRRRR by now? … Downloadable PDFs of APBA sets would be awesome. … The GameCo ought to send out little certificates to replayers when they finish a full-season project using C&D.

Great survey, thank you for making it happen and I’m looking forward to the results.

Love the baseball game! The cards tell you so much more about a player’s abilities and tendencies than you get from reading his stats in a newspaper.Keep up the good work! Cappy

Thank you for the opportunity to participate.

If you really want to market APBA to the youngun’s then you would have to make a voice-activated, iPhone compatible, 5 minute or less, flash-bang, rap induced, ADHD version to keep their interest. And oh yeah, you would have to PAY THEM to play it. Such is the entitlement generation that is about to blossom in our Brave New Obama World (BNOW!).

CArd correction updates for all APBA games all time, where are they?

I’ve tried to find information on APBA baseball seasons when I was young as just starting to play (i.e. late 1960′s to early 1970′s). I have found the APBA Handbook and miscellaneous APBA Journals. They are very informative, but very expensive. Acquiring historical information about APBA

I appreciate John Herson’s efforts at continuing and growing the games and the open communication. I also appreciate all the work of Skeet,Varyl, and Marc over the years.

As mentioned, I have been in an APBA football league for years. I love it not only for the game play, but the camaderie of getting out once a week and having beers and talking football with fellow competitors. I feel the game could be better and I wonder how much effort is put into football considering baseball is APBA’s bread and butter. That being said, I like the product and hope it continues and that improvements are made to make it the #1 sports sim football board game.

Like to see a new APBA computer football game. Also…No more perforated cards for any sport. Would pay more. Improve web site.

Good survey. I wish John and the Company the best of luck. I’m behind you as I have been since 1966.

Looking forward to the results.

i dont know

Thanks for all you do relating to the game or hobby we all share and love

I would like to see results of the survey.

I would be very interested in attending a convention, including the national one. I’ve not been able to do so in the past, but would like to. Also, the past time I played in a league it was the mid-80s. I’d like to do so again, but haven’t gotten active in looking for one.

It’s the best board game ever created. Keep it going!

have a convention in vegas or on the west coast again

Good luck to the new ownership. Please keep the quality of the products as high as it has traditionally been and do not sacrifice the interests of the dice and card players when you roll out the new computer game.

Really like the game

I have offered to be a beta tester for 5.75 and the lack of response makes me worry about the product direction,,,,

I had a lot of fun taking your survey.

I need the Windows7 version ASAP. I couldn’t wait so I purchased Diamond Mind Baseball. not going to use cards ever again.

I would absolutely love to know the results. Dan Velderrain (ocgolfdawg@me.com) Also would be interested in helping out reference a tournament out here or anything else APBA has going on!!!

I like the game. Enjoy playing it on a limited basis. I hope it stays around.

I think you ought to ask us APBA old timers whose been playing the game the longest. I’d love to know who else has been playing since 1960–and I’d like to learn about anyone who’s been playing the game since it was first marketed.

None at this time. Thanks for allowing me to take the survey

Move convetnion to Atlanta or at least have a regional convention there. Also, offer all APBA games as tournaments at said convention.

No comments or questions except with getting the young kids interested in APBA it would also be athing to try to get the seniors to pick up the game. I’m sure assisted living centers and retirement homes would be receptive. I for one am retired, but don’t live in a retirement home it is just an idea. Since people are living longer playing APBA Baseball would keep their mind stimulated.

I know there are not as many of us as there are baseball players but send some love to the football players of the world.

A good survey indeed. APBA needs to get to the younger market, We are all aging, I fear, and someday, unless newbies are attracted there simply won’t be an APBA. Those of us 50+ are the ‘bill payers’, however, we ALL started at a much younger age.

Good survey–a few questions don’t include all the realm of answers and is confusing especially if you are a BBW player

It takes me over an hour to set-up a masters game and complete it. I’m fascinated that players recreate whole or major parts of seasons. I don’t know how they do it or have time for anything else. Wish I could play faster or had that type of attention span. I wish there was a guide to playing these types of projects. I think I would buy more apba products if I could complete such extended projects quickly.

I enjoy reading the APBA Blog – it’s just got good, solid APBA content. The forums have become an embarassment with the childlike behavior

Thank you for doing this.

wish i had more free time to pursue a great hobby

I’m new to the blog – some interesting stuff here. As with my prior answers – whatever became of APBA computer football?

The Great APBA Fan Survey: APBA and the Community

This is the last set of results of The Great APBA Fan Survey.  You can see all the posts with survey results here.  Most likely, I’ll follow up with a summary article and maybe include your final comments (those were pretty good).

This last set deals with APBA and the Community… how we interact with fellow APBA fans that we don’t see on a daily basis.

Have you ever been to an APBA Convention?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 78 21.61%
No 279 77.29%
No answer 4 1.11%

Comments:  Given the time and financial commitment necessary to attend an event that may be on the other side of the country, I suppose 21% is a pretty good number.

Do you frequent online APBA communities such as Between the Lines and the various Facebook groups?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 317 87.81%
No 39 10.80%
No answer 5 1.39%

Comments:  In hindsight, it would have been better to separate these two.  It would be interesting to see what percentage of fans actively monitor BOTH BTL and the Facebook groups.

That said, it’s no surprise that APBA fans find info, camaraderie, and support online.

In general, are you satisfied with the direction the APBA Company is headed now?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes, I’m satisfied with the direction the Company is headed 195 48.75%
I’ll wait and see 141 35.25%
No, I don’t like the direction they are headed 21 5.25%

Comments:  This was a big question I was looking forward to the results.

Mostly good news for Mr. Herson.  Only a very small amount (5%) are not happy with the way things are run at the APBA Company.  A good portion are taking a “wait and see” approach though.

Have you ever traveled more than two hours just to play APBA?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 99 27.42%
No 258 71.47%
No answer 4 1.11%

Comments:  I threw this in on a lark.  Just to see how many other people are crazy as I am.

Have you ever participated in an organized APBA tournament?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 81 22.44%
No 276 76.45%
No answer 4 1.11%

Comments:  I know there are organized tournaments throughout the country (as well as the one that takes place every year at the national convention).  I was just curious how many of you had taken part in one.

If there was an opportunity to have a regional APBA convention, how interested would you be in attending such an event?

image

Answer Count Percentage
Not interested 62 17.22%
Maybe if my schedule allows 221 61.39%
Just tell me when and where 71 19.72%
No answer 6 1.67%

Comments:  I’ve heard this idea bandied about online by certain people.  Like I said, the cost of a national convention might be prohibitive.  A more regional convention might be more doable for people.

Sounds like it may be a possible alternative if there were willing organizers.

I’ll do a follow up post that summarizes the survey in a couple days.

The Great APBA Fan Survey: How to get youth involved in APBA

I’m nearing the end of my run of disclosing the results of The Great APBA Fan Survey I did a couple weeks ago (here are the responses I’ve posted so far).  Tonight, I ‘m going to post the answers you gave about how to get more youth involved in the game of APBA, a question APBA CEO John Herson probably racks his brain about all the time.

Here was the exact question asked in the survey:

In your opinion, what would be the best way to promote APBA to get more younger people involved?

Before I display the answers, a couple of points:

One, I was impressed by the different of perspectives.  Some had a more modern solutions (online advertising, apps etc) while others hearken back to what got them interested in the game (ads in sports magazines, traditional brochures).  Honestly, I see a need for both.

More importantly, I was impressed how a lot of these ideas weren’t a just call to the APBA Company to solve the problem alone.  We as fans, can do our part by getting young people more interested in the game we love.

Finally, some of respondents admitted they just didn’t know, proving this is not a simple problem to solve.

To the responses!

APBA sponsored tournaments

online advertising (especially facebook), bringing the game to gaming conventions, sending reps with the game to MLB stadiums on fan days to try and promote the game (maybe goto a redsox game and give away sets of sox and yankees to anyone who rolls an inning or something?)

Become connected with MLB. Set up tournaments throughout the country.

Teach it to grandchildren.

Advertising in publications they read.

produce an on-line game

I keep requesting an iPad version or iPhone version for many years but nobody is listening. I know younger people would jump all over it. Speaking for myself a 52 year-old whose life is mobile and I don’t have time to sit with the cards like I used to, if I could take APBA with me on a tablet, I would be energized.

I am an old timer and prefer the dice and board games. There’s a tranquility about rolling a game. However, kids need video and quick-paced stuff, so I’d guess an APBA game for Wii, or some type of phone app for their smartphones could draw them in.

Not really sure. It doesn’t hold to their standards at this point. Needs to be computerized (all sports) at a minimum

sell it in stores

Advertise more

Online fantasy sites for those that might like Sim action rather than wait to see results next day. I do both, but prefer ABPA. I think fantasy would like competitive leagues and ownership, but would want an automated stat product as a time saver

introducing the game to kids face-to-face

demos and giveaways at ball games for kids. Kids could set a lineup and play 3 innings with basic instruction. I will volunteer at my local stadium ( Angel stadium).

Advertising

actually marketing. No one in new jersey knows of APBA and they lack interest because it isnt shown to them young and doesn reach anyone if they traveled to schools for a day and let the kids play it will grow at some point or have a few signs for it.

That’s a good question. I wish I had a good answer.

APBA is more involved, you have a more intimate relationship with the player cards and the game itself. But I really don’t know the answer since I’m now a couple generations older. I don’t understand the attraction of many computer generated games, x-box etc.

more ads in magazines

School Clubs for Math or Statistics type classes or maybe School clubs promoting board games.

It’s tough in the video game world

Advertise like in the old days. Almost everyone I talk to said that is how they got started, the ads.

Social media and Facebook in particular. A Facebook game or iPhone applet similar to what SOM does with its ‘blitz game’ might help.

Stress the "retro" coolness of board games. Make the computer version more attractive and interactive.

Develop an APBA app

This is a tough one. Kids today have too many video games and online games to want to sit down and play a board game. I think the best chance to draw a young audience would be an interactive online game where kids could play against friends or other players in organized leagues.

Baseball websights

Target youth groups such as the Boys Scouts,

send some games to the military. seitz played in the barrracks. may be good to send those leftover 1980′s years left in lancaster overseas

Yahoo sites, online options.

a 20 & under tournament with good publicity pre and post event

Through kids sports magazines. Maybe publish something through the Scholastic Book Club

Get out an updated computer version

Don’t know. I’m not a marketing person.

Have children and help them learn to love baseball.

Social media outlets

APBA needs to be at the Major and Minor League ball parks. That’s where you will find the fans. Put up a booth at the ball park and sell the game there – have someone playing the game while people walk by on their way to get a hot dog. Games would fly off the shelf.

Upgrade the computer games

Put ads back in baseball magazines. Send out the brochures from the past. TV ads probably out of question, but what about high profile web sites associated with baseball.

Not sure I have tried to get my son interested (12 yo) same age as I was when I started apba, but he is not that interested. He’ll play a game or two with me and then gets bored with it. Once in a while he will surprise me and want to play if he has nothing better to do on a rainy day. So basically I don’t have an answer to this question

young people are hopeless, sorry. they can’t get their little minds past video games.

Wish I knew! I will do my best with my little girl when she’s older.

have them play a game.

BETTER WINDOWS GAME

Update the website

Advertise online and on tv.

Advertise on IGN, gamestop, etc….sites that cater to video game reviews/products

Get the website updated & maybe interactive like strat has with their three minute baseball. Get the games more public exposure.

Sell APBA games in hobby/game stores. With an online-only presence, you almost have to know what ABPA is before you could buy it.

APBA would need to have an online game to attract the younger generation. This generation is fascinated with hand-held devices and apba would need to become compatible.

Hold APBA Days at schools, civic associations, fairs

T.V.

I’ve got no idea. I feel like I’m from another planet when I see all the stupid shit youngsters are into.

Focus on computer versions for young people but keep cards and dice also.

Internet ads on sites frequently visited by younger kids.

Make the website more detailed in how it explains the game (and how they are played), downloadable pdf game brochures like the one’s from the 1980s, detailed season card writeups so that younger generations can learn a little about a season before purchasing it, and finally get BBW updated with current announcers to listen to.

I mention it, describe it, and play it with the kid if he shows any interest. I’m strictly one on one, though I’ll sure teach the kids’ family members if any are interested, and I abide by any restrictions that family has set up. I guess I’ve introduced APBA to three or four kids and a couple of adults this way.

Advertise as different from video games

Online advertising and sports magazine advertising. And bring the color brochures back or at least post them online.

Best bet in my opinion is to reach out to those that grow tired of ridiculously unrealistic results. Preach realism.

Play with kids!

Gradually go to sophisticated computer games and dump the cards, otherwise when this generation dies out you will have no market

Make an online version available that would still keep the heart and soul of the game intact. As in making a video connection a priority but not a mandate to play online. Make versions available that can cut the overall playing time if the customer so desires.

Modern computer game(s). XBox, Ipad, phone apps, they will try these things just to use there phone if nothing else. Plus it is what they expect from a game. They will spend 20 minutes setting up an app to order a pizza, rather than a 1 min phone call.

sell a classroom version

Play the game with the young ones, buy the game for a Boys Club, YMCA etc

Just play it with them. I have shown it to my children and they like it. Just have to put it in front of them rather than the ipod, or xbox.

Boys and Girls clubs School Clubs Little Leagues???

i wish i knew the answer to that one

Math teacher with an APBA club in school

Internet advertising.

Online play with graphics.

Baseball card shows, maybe Little League groups

When you sell the basic game include players that these kids would know, not the 1953 Yankees and Dodgers.

advertise in teen markets

Organize regional tournaments. Make it a known commodity, that there are APBA Tournaments around, for people to meet other APBA enthusiasts, etc, without needing to travel across the country.

Online advertisement

By creating even a basic online game, perhaps by creating a facebook game. Maybe even creating a new game using the APBA model. I have long thought it would be a great business model if a company like APBA partnered with a baseball card company like Topps. You could have a player picture on one side of the card and the game card on the other. You then were forced to buy packs to create your team. It makes the game a collectors hobby, but also makes you want to keep collecting to improve your team. Maybe create an online component for this as well where you can take the players to an online game format.

Teach the game to our children. If there is a love for baseball, a love for APBA could develop

BBW online.

With youth tournaments at area recreation sites.

online advertising

On-Line advertising, with an on-line example of the game (perhaps a few innings worth).

Don’t know if it is possible. I see from the "age survey" at APBABTL that the population is aging at a normal rate. The average survey age in the 1970′s was about 17-18(?) and 40 years later the ABPABTL average survey age was in the late 50s.

Incorporate it into Facebook like Farmville.

Have APBA donate extra/outdated games and sets to Boys and Girls club organizations. If APBA does that, I’ll volunteer down at my local Boys and Girls club to teach the kids how to play APBA games.

In favor of young participation but will leave it to the experts as to how.

Internet advertising.

I play with my grandkids

Take it out to games, sports collector shows, etc…

create a dazzling website with a sample download interested kids can actually play with to get idea. then advertise like hell at yahoo google etc portal sites that everyone out there uses.

advertise on media they use, Facebook, twitter, on web sites they frequent.

The website MUST contain a colorful brochure (or slide show) of the cards and charts and take the potential gamer through a inning or a football drive, or a couple of minutes of hockey or soccer.

not sure as table games are just not "in" with very many people under the age of 50

Honestly, I don’t know if you can. I have asked my brother about getting his boys involved but he doesn’t think they’d be interested.

don’t know. They have to have a love for baseball first then the game will come naturally

Finding the fountain of youth to make us oldsters younger. Realistically with video games and "fantasy" sports leagues I don’t have much hope of many younger people ever playing APBA or other board games.

bring back the brochures, promote APBA at schools

An updated computer game. I don’t think you can reasonably expect to get today’s kids to play a card and dice game.

This a great question. I only wish I had a great idea so I could give you a great answer. There is one idea I’ve had in my head for many years. I think there should be at least one APBA Baseball Game and APBA Football Game on every sea going freighter ship. The crews on these are out to sea 10-12 weeks at a time. I’m sure they don’t work 24 hours a day. What a great way to to be entertained out there. I also have often the APBA Games would be great thing for fire stations to have.

conventions in areas

it’s not the type of game younger guys want to play….I fear our generation may be the last players

Advertise, Advertise, Advertise! Stress benefits of Brain over Brawn… or at least brain over Hand Eye coordination… and "Realism" as opposed to out of proportion video game results… maybe make product more Visually appealing (?)… Player Photos/Logos on cards (probably "Cost Prohibitive"). Promote that this is NOT just a Game… which it Never was to most of us…

More advertising. The updated computer game will go a long way in determining if APBA will be able to get more young people involved.

word of mouth – i.e. current players introducing the game to children, grandchildren, friends, co-workers, neighbours etc. – however, having said that, I can’t recall ever showing it to anyone other than my wife, who basically tolerates it because it keeps me in the house and handy!

1. We have to spend time playing the game with our kids. 2. Improve the computer game. My experience is that it is difficult to set up and customize. The graphics are poor and you have to buy stadium backgrounds separately.

Sell products at sporting good stores

internet

We just had a younger person (my 20-year-old nephew) join our face-to-face league. He enjoys the camaraderie of coming out on "game night" drinking beer, playing his game while 7 others are going on, talking trade and shooting the bull. If you could get that aspect of the game across to the younger generation, perhaps they would find it fun.

If I knew I’d tell you. APBA isn’t the problem it is too much of an ADD society with little or no imagination.

I dont know

A program for customers to donate to. Games could then go to childrens hospitals. Something along this train of thought.

Just play it with someone.

Tie it in with fantasy baseball online, somehow?

Do not know. I don’t know if we can compete with technology.

A few years ago APBA had "coaches" going to places that they wanted to sell the game, i.e hobby or card shops. The reception was great and I know I got them some good orders from young kids. One mom bought the game, then came bck and bought one for her husband.

not a clue

1. Improved website. 2.Offer a sample game with 4 to 6 current teams included. Give customer the choice of which teams are included.

computer game

promote the game on MLB Network and some strictly baseball websites

wish I had a good answer for this but sadly I think it must include a computer is some way…..C and D just does not do it for kidos.

Tough call, but there is NO marketing in this area. Get it out to baseball card shops. Kids do play card games, it can be done but the current marketing model will not work for this question

I don’t know…

just teach your kids. It teaches young people the game and the imagination is great as a kid. I loved playing replays with my friend and his dad one summer of 7th/8th grade. I’ve been playing ever since. I have been in 2 leagues since I was 21. I am now 36.

Social networking sites Associate with MLB Baseball Media (e.g. if they are watching MLB or at an MLB game, that’s probably where your potential target is going to be)

Capture stat-heavy young people by advertising heavily on Baseball Reference. Also get into the table-game crowd with other gamer conventions.

Provide games to schools for club play, develop a marketing partnership with online or print media outlets

Make it more affordable

Don’t know

Online advertisements

tv

Advertise and make the cards better!!!! Also, update the computer version.

Difficult to do as kids like the Playstation, X-Box type of baseball sim–if they like that at all as they might rather be playing Guitar Hero or Call of Duty. Maybe APBA for X-Box, etc., might be the way to go. When I was a kid, an APBA-type *board* game was the only one in town. It’s not like that anymore and APBA might either have to take the X-Box route or wait for the kids to get older and their tastes change.

Word of mouth from current APBA players.

create an online commercial. Even a youtube video

advertise on video games!

Create a version for the sports console game systems

That’s the conundrum isn’t it. I have tried on many occasions to get my children (10 and 7) to play all type of board games. I love Euro games as well as sports games and have had little success cracking that nut.

Advertise on video game boxes and run ads during the halftime of games !

Form a club in the schools.

Put all the games on PC.

Anything is going to cost money, and I realize that. One suggestion I’ve publicly made on the Yahoo Group was to have APBA set up a booth, or partner with someone else for a booth at the New York Toy Fair. The kids don’t go there, but the retailers do, and I think that’s one area that they need to explore. Another way would be to partner with MLB and somehow do active displays (guys actually playing) at the ballparks. Maybe something really grass roots like doing the above at little league parks. Promote it as a "family time" activity for dad’s (and mom’s) and kids.

Advertise in daily newspapers and on tv. Hold conventions around the country.

HAVE SOME TYPE OF APBA DAY, INCLUDING SOME TRIAL GAME GIVEAWAY AND DEMOS, AT SOME MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL GAMES.

Show them the realism of the statistics of playing APBA

A lot more advertising, like in the "good old days."

Maybe get some games into boys and girls clubs.

You would need to have a first rate video game with video and Stat based options

Play with your kids. Donate sets to Boys/ Girls clubs.

Better advertising like the old brochures

I really dont know.

New computer version of master game

Develop an Internet game

It would have to be something with either the internet or other electronic media.

Retail Sales

computerize everything…kids today have no interest in sitting down to play a tabletop version of anything

I have thought about that a lot…it seems computers have taken over the gaming industry…kids do not want to roll dice…no one plays RISK anymore either.

On line ads: Strat-O-Matic advertises on the Sporting News web site

It would be for MLB to stop the silly draconian licensing fees and allow companies to create games

I have no idea.

Online tournaments

Update the computer game

Not sure what drives the younger crowd. To get the visibility, maybe events done in conjunction with MLB franchises?

Improve the appearance of the products

don’t care

Develop a computer baseball game that includes some kind of animation.

Sell a game and allow the kids to pick the 2 teams they want to play. Make it affordable, kind of link SOM kids game

Display the game to Boys clubs or church youth groups, similar to what was done at the APBA Convention and Tournament last summer. The kids who attended had a great time and were excited about the tournament and playing with other APBA fans.

Not clear. I have tried to get my boys interested in playing and they have shown little interest

You have to dance with the one that brung ya!!! Sports magazines, word or mouth..

Colorful Brochures; interactive website; sell game in toy/hobby/game stores. Advertise in the media to some degree, even small. Updated computer games that are fully the current standard.

In the basic baseball box, they should have recent teams! The players born in the 50′s, the two standard 1953 teams they include might be okay, but the younger players, unless they are really into history, have no idea who Duke Snider or Johnny Sain were. They should include some recent teams with current players like Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder and Ichiro Suzuki. It might be a pain to box and stock but if you want to appeal to the younger players, the game should have players they are familiar with.

In my opinion I think that to promote the game would be to have APBA sponsored tournaments around the country. That would showcase the game. If people can walk into a store that has people playing Warhammer it may work for people looking for a sports game to play. I know when I was young one the highs was being able to control players that I liked and if I wanted to trade them or bench them I could. The ability to control the aspects of the game were exciting and if you could showcase that aspect would go a long way to show the game to a younger player.

Not sure…thats a tough one, so much competition for their time. I remember playing a lot of apba and strat in highschool during home room, but they dont give the kids that kind of free time anymore.

Start leagues at schools or community centers

on line presence – I got into Strat by playing their on-line version. Got hooked

This would take a good deal of advertising on the computer

have the actual game on the shelves of a say, a target or a dedicated toy store like toy-r-us. also, the box design could use a overhaul……to compete with video games, kids have got to know that the game has substance AND style. APBA needs to add a little flash to compete with the Madden games. Real game photos maybe? I know that’s what sold me when I had a choice between a sega genesis and APBA….the APBA football game just looked way cooler with that picture of the cleveland browns and pittsburgh steelers on the cover of the box. also, pitching a family friendly environment might entice parents to spend some "quality" time with their kids. maybe working with local hobby shops and have them introduce the game to kids who play other games….the kid who is already interested in table top games, like dungeon and dragons, or collectable card games like Magic the gathering, should be a priority audience for APBA.

Offer on-line, advertise in magazines

Get it into the schools. Promote it as an available after-school activity. We have done this with Subbuteo and it led to some of the youth growing up to be the best players in the country.

Give them a free starter set at a MLB baseball game

With the fast action software era we’re in I don’t believe you can change young people to get involved. To me it’s something that’s in your soul to want to play sport simulation games.

Word of mouth. Fathers to sons. Friends to friends. Hard to compete with HD Graphics and Video games. I grew up with board games, but I like playing versions of these on my phone or iPad. A simple computer version that can work easily on all OS platforms might attract a young baseball/football fan.

I became interested in APBA at the age of 12 from an ad in Baseball Digest. Suggest doing the same in similar mags.

I would think a version of APBA baseball designed to play on PS or Xbox might have the potential to reach some younger users. Especially if you could include a mix of games: baseball, golf, horse racing for example.

Unsure.

Upgrade the computer version of baseball

computer version of the basic game. Keep it simple. Simulated games with too much strategy would not be desirable. Younger people seem to strive for instant gratification.

I don’t think younger people can sit down longer than 5 minutes to play a game. It has to flash, have loud music, rap about ho’s and pimps, and wear it’s pants down to their crack. I wouldn’t promote APBA to younger people. Let it die with us older folks.

promote the leagues , the friendships, competition and longevity. APBA has brought me together with and extended my family.

Promotions with local professional teams, local card shops, game shops, etc. And not just the BIG cities.

develop video type games. some might try board games later in life.

Online ads, advertising during network sporting events, magazine ads in preview magazines, Twitter, Facebook

A more detailed website.

I wish I could tell you.

have it in more stores than they do now

Change the culture and mindset of America from visual immediacy to intellectual patience (and good luck with that!)

Stats always suck in stat geeks, even young ones.

Put ads in different sporting magazines/newspapers

i dont know

Turn it into a first person shooter and sell it on game consoles?

It would have to be virtually, most likely via the internet…younger generation loves their "Madden".

Promote at ballparks minor league, major league, little league.

Holding kids only tournaments.

I really have no idea. Obviously, some online/computer version is probably important for this. I think people passing it down to their children is probably the most effective thing, so keeping current players happy is a must.

Internet advertising. Yes, I sell Internet advertising, so I guess I have a vested interest in saying that, but that’s where the younger generations are. The company needs to advertise on the Internet and Smart Phones if they want to survive.

Get the game on Steam and on console systems. Heck it would be nice to see APBA or another baseball sim be combined with the nice graphics of MLB The Show for an eye catching baseball sim.

get them off the computer

A beautiful website with exciting customer endorsements; the kind of superb ads on your website as the glossy brochures Apba put out in the 60s and 70s.

very good question with now answer–outlaw computer games—i have played apba since 1960 and have a son who is 37 and i could not get him into apba—and he loves baseball—i dont know

Word of mouth is, of course, best. Maybe booths at sports related conferences–SABR and alike–might be productive.

you just have to get them to play it

Make a really look online game true to the basic game where the participant could see under the hood while the game was in progress. 22-5 home run!

Computers !!! that’s what they do. Facebook is what got me back into it….

Try to develop computer simulations that have enhanced/improved Visual and Audio effects without sacrificing statistical accuracy

Playing the basic game where groups of young people are (i.e., schools, churches, boys/girls clubs, etc)

Hard question. Kids today like video games, games of movement, not really stat guys like we guys of old. The first season I ever played was the 1961 season and I’ll always remember Roger Maris’ card, 3 ones. My last modern day season bought was in 1990…main reason, too much expansion…I’ve never seen the Bonds, McGwire, Sosa cards(tho I’d like to peek at em")

Great Question!!! I didn’t get hooked until I was in High School…. I saw the add in Street and Smith and ordered the brochure with sample card and after reading the brochure I had to have that game…. I think if you are a baseball fan you can’t help but not love this game…. if you don’t know the players or don’t care then this game isn’t for you.

If you know a young person who’s a sports nut, show it to him.

It has to come from Major League Baseball. Pick up the pace of the game. If you don’t love it on the field, you won’t play the game.

Design an electronic version of APBA that plays on the Apple iPad.

With the internet as popular as it is now. Advertising on sports websites would be the way to go. (Sporting news, espn,mlb.com, baseball-reference etc)

Maybe a return back tot he master charts with all the information right there. All the page turning has to be a negative in this generation’s mind.

You have to find someone who is younger and "cool" who plays it (like a Derek Jeter) and promote that

Go to the schools or recreation centers if they still have them

I think there has to be a better computer version.

Via the web, that is where so many people are these days. However, the paper ad may still produce results. It has been a long time, perhaps it is time to try it again.

Color brochures like Seitz did Describe all the advantages of a more complete game to the millions of fantasy baseball players, Something that included player arms, fielding, etc. Sell from the marketing standpoint that it is the next step up to playing adult games rather than clueless joystick games. Cerebral rather than simple skill with a joystick

Internet, TV and/or radio commercials

Relationships with kids baseball products (SI for Kids, Topps, etc. )

television and internet ads

Home school market – tie it into math and problem solving (how to draft a team, etc.)

well when i was young i discovered APBA by reading Magazines the internet is now the main way people find out about sports so advertise online

Only computer, then a pure emphasis on stats, being willing to go anti-graphic as a selling point.

Ads online and in sporting publications.

Social media. Use online sites to promote the board game.

Hard to say since young people prefer visuals to statistical replays.

advertisement on young people web sites, some way to attract kids to actually play the game and get interested;heavy exposure at baseball, football camps.

Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club gifted new card set by APBA

I got a very excited Facebook message from Brian Cavanaugh who works with the Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club in the Philadelphia area.

“I came home from work today and sitting in my door was a package from APBA. I haven’t ordered anything since last summer so I knew exactly what it was. John sent the kids at the club the 2011 season cards!! This is so out of the blue, how can I possibly thank him enough for this and everything…I’m so blown away right now!!!!”

For those not familiar with Brian’s story, he’s set up an APBA league within the Boys and Girls Club and the kids involved each draft and play their own team.  Many of the kids also attended the last APBA Convention.

I posted more info about the Bridesburg League here a while back.  On behalf of the rest of the APBA community, thanks to Brian for his work (I know he has fun doing it, too) and for bringing the average age of the APBA fan down a notch!

And thanks also to John Herson and the APBA Co. for thinking of the Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club.  This is the second year they’ve done this.  I’m sure money is probably scarce for the BBGC and getting the new cards really helps!

The Great APBA Fan Survey: What would you change about the APBA game? (long)

I’m almost done with the survey results of the Great APBA Fan Survey.  I have one more set of questions to publish.  There were a few questions like this one though that aren’t so easily graphed.  So I’m just publishing the answers as is.

Here was the full question:

If there was one thing you could change about the APBA Game (baseball, football, soccer, whatever you play), what would it be?

Over 280 people answered this question and you get to read every one if you want.

better fielding system

I WOULD MAKE ALL OF THE CARDS SETS AVAILABLE AND SELL EVEN SETS BY THE DECADE SO YOU COULD BUY 10 YEARS AT ONCE AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE. I WOULD KEEP THE CARDS THE TRADITIONAL WAY NO ADDING STATS TO THE CARDS…

They need to get the new version of BBW out!

I would want a computer recreation of the card-based master game that works on Mac and Windows (and iPad or Android tablet), internet-capable, so I could play "face-to-face" over the internet.

Make the baseball game more realistic. Too many errors, no range factor for fielders, unusual numbers & error numbers should be random, base stealing should incorporate pitcher’s ability to hold runners & catcher’s caught stealing percentage, there should be more than four basic pitcher’s grades, home runs allowed should be a part of the basic game, and pitcher’s should get fatigued as the games go on.

Baseball-fatigue system for pitchers. Regrade pitchers of old sets to conform with recent grading criteria.

nothing

Updated BBW…but not based strictly on the board game…keeping the variables that Miller Assoc. introduced.

I would like to see the fielding range and error freguency seperated and not be dependent on base situation

update the computer version of baseball to meet 21st century standards. Not graphically but user interface etc.

Add another pitching grade for Basic baseball.

fix the injuries…same position players get hurt all the time..they need a injury book

Upgrade Baseball and a new Football version.

Errors in baseball’s basic game, left right splits in basic Individual defensive ratings in soccer

upgraded BBW game

Pitching isn’t realistic enough. I think pitching is the key to the game and the simple rating system isn’t enough, at the same time the Master game is not for me.

I’d like to see BBW updated.

update basic game boards

I would like to see individual defensive ratings incorporated into the soccer game – don’t know how best to do that, but I’d love to see it done.

i always wanted to play the basic board game ( with dice and cards shown) on the computer.

Nothing…love the game!

I would say limit double plays and the old cards strikeout too much against newer sets. The new cards i wont even buy because of lack of walks,7′s on a 55 for a .300 plus batting average hitter. The new cards aren’t worth buying since they cant compete with the old ones.

satisfied as is…

A simplified version of APBA Basketball. I tried APBA Basketball in the mid 1990′s, but found it way to time consuming. I currently play APBA Baseball, Football, and Hockey, but use Strat-o-Matic Basketball for my basketball replays.

I’d like to see a card set made each year from the previous season like they do now but using the 50/50 system. In other words half the results off the pitchers card half off the batters card. More fun for platooning that way. I know there are other games out there that do this but they get too complicated with there range ratings, pitcher fatigue and other things I don’t care as much about. They could just offer this as another optional card set but keep the basic game simple as is.

I would like the opportunity to merge BBW and Dice BB together. For example, say I want to replay a season but don’t have time to roll all the games for all the teams in a season. SO if I could play a portion of the season using the computer game to Easily add to the D&C results, that might be cool.

more fringe players

It may actually be the perfect game, besides actual real-life baseball!

Can’t think of anything

Include all the players rather than just having 20 and having to buy the extra players that you need to really play the game right.

As a Basic Game replayer, I would love to see the game company settle on an RP-number random generator. However, I’m too true to the idea of ‘pure APBA’ in the form of the Basic Game to really be bothered about it.

Computer game should give you a better idea of the chances of success of baserunning options

I would make more older sets available

I’d like to see the big boards return. I realize it may not be cost effective but I like them.

Nothing

More pitching grades in the basic game.

No

Baseball, I like it the way it is.

buy GTOP as single teams again

I grew up playing APBA baseball with my dad & played it off on for a number of years.I have Strat & do enjoy it but like the solo play of APBA better. The last set I bought was the 30s&50s decade sets. I was very disappointed, there were names missing from the cards. I don’t like the fact tht APBA won’t include its Master game with Basic game, like Stratomatic. I’m excited about the new direction, Stratomatic has done a good job marketing, they have been a better advertiser than APBA. I hope that changes with new direction. Still enjoy cards & dice;)

Blend the Master game with the Basic for baseball and offer it as an optional game

Have a computer version of the Basic Baseball Game

Go back to the larger more basic boards. Easier to handle and read.

I don’t know. I like it the way it is.

Redesign the football game to have more individual impacts and allow for much greater difference based on team defense and offense ratings.

I don’t like the changes made a few years ago when the K was added and the boards were changed. I think they should revert to the older system…it really changes things when using old cards with new boards and/or new cards with the old boards. I think the change was too drastic. The changes to the Hit & Run boards also bother me. I think it would be nice if team names were printed on the cards.

I think the Baseball game is a great game, easy to learn, easy to master and a lot of fun. I recently purchased the newer version of the situation booklet and find that to be a little more realistic than the older version I was using. Overall, I wouldn’t really change anything but I am not a left-brain thinker!

Baseball – Put the master symbols on the cards

BBW – Needs a play-by-play scorekeeping printout (the script is too long)

Fix the bugs in BBW, which is in the process of being done. Add bells and whistles to the game. Players pics and such. Have all reports available to print in HTML. Have a recap for each individual game. New announcer that can say all names. Bring all the stat information full commentary gives to light commentary and leave out the added useless info Ernie spouts.

Create format to play carded game with computer based statistic collating. (I think I want this and then I wonder if half of my enjoyment is manually collating and entering the game stats myself)

have no real desire to change it.

BBW–let me know the runner chances!

dude up grade the BBW

Game is fine but update the website!

No Soccer. Serious Answer: Not sure. I am relatively satisfied.

For APBA Baseball I would change it so you can call a steak whenever you want to.

The box!! The boxes APBA uses are the worst.

incorporate some type of hold rating for potential base stealers in master game

Consistant quality of cards. More football seasons.

I would sell the master game in a bundle with the basic game.

add a little more pitching realism to the basic game

Less penalties in football.

Should have a Career Database…………APBA is missing the boat with having us buy all these things from outside of APBA Give us OPTIONS: We want big white boards? Sell them to us…. We want MG symbols on the cards…..sell them to us Make a Hybrid MG-BG; its soooooo easy! And fix the BAVG/SLG/OBA to the correct BAVG/OBA/SLG for cryin out loud. Website: bring back the color brochure; sample player card; descriptions of each season. Utilize the website to all its potential. Create an APBA "Round Table" where John Herson can conference with a group of APBA players for ideas and input.

Only use the font that started in 1970 and ended in 1985 I could read so much better.LOL or maybe use the font from original 1963 or 1964 when printing an new season.

Just a little fine-tuning of the basic baseball game.

Increase basic game pitchers gardes

The font of the cards and master symbols for my aging eyes.

Get someone to proofread that stuff–it’s embarrassing to see fuck ups on the website and newsletters. Hell, I’d do it for free.

upate the basic baseball basic game some. Add more rare plays, pitch.er fatigue system

For basic game, make Grade A pitchers less dominant & grade D just a little better. Also would like to be able to buy only updated charts w/o buying new game. Also teams s/b 24/25 players instead of 20. Shouldn’t have to buy extra players.

I like it the way it is. Any modifications I have made or used have been at my discretion to make my replays more enjoyable. The APBA game model is just fine the way it is.

I’ve spent a lot of time molding the APBA Master Baseball Game into the game I want to play. I’ve regraded pitchers, altered position players’ numbers and even scrapped some of the board results, replacing them with some of my own design. In answer to your question, I’ve already done it.

At the moment, nothing.

For baseball, I would like to see some sort of fatigue system for pitchers in the basic game. For soccer, mostly just a more clear instructions manuel. Instructions seem vague and incomplete. Also would like to see stats — particularly number of starts — on the cards, like baseball. That way it would be easier to tell which particular formation a club liked to utilize most often.

Primarily BBW. The only thing I might change, is maybe a little more animation to the game. That really would be a can of worms that doesn’t really need opened though LOL

BBW – More module compatibility with Word/Excel and a career record keeping module

Baseball Master Game – should be a "ballpark" result on batter card (1/36 similar to 36-41), and each stadium with own card, reroll for result … a "50" like soccer, maybe? Soccer – a master version with more formation effects instead of just the three, improved shot distribution and statistical accuracy. Should have tested it more before publication. You KNOW I’m right about that last one!

Computer football game

Find some way to reduce the time it takes to play a complete game. Our league is losing players due to the time it takes to play. Also this year the travel has come into play with gas going back to $4 a gallon. So if there was a PC game available or a method of playing over the web it might help in interest and all around.

I play the BG. The MG is more complex than I like, but I would like to see the BG have a few of the MG options. (1) Add MG stealing. (2) Pitcher fatigue Q factor. (3) More rare plays in BG. I will probably do a replay one year with these changes.

in football i would like to be able to keep more defensive stats such as tackels and forced fumbles. in addition to sacks and int’s. also wish the fumbles recoveries and int’s weren’t generic and more to what they had in real life wherever possible.

Cut down on the 1-3 play result

Nothing

I would really like to see a computer game, and NOT the current game. Something that has the cards and dice, like the one on your site. Basically the table version on a PC, rather MAC.

better service from the company

nothing really

An accurate computer representation of the APBA Basic game

Keep the 12 in the same location on the card every year. I hate it when they put the 12 at a location where we have learned to expect a specific result, like 12, 32, 52, etc. Since they now print the year on the card there is no reason to move the 12 around to be able to tell what year it was.

Nothing.

Have Herson sell the gameco to Jim Sce.

I would prefer going back to the "old" days of large boards and thicker cards. It’s is my only vice so I don’t care about spending more money to enjoy this hobby.

update baseball wizard to work with 5.75

Create a version between the Basic Game & Master Game

I’d really like to see more people play the game. Sometimes as a 27 year old I feel like i’m on an island playing the game. I’d also like to see APBA move more toward the 21st century with perhaps an online game.

Expanded fielding ratings to discern from errors and playmaking ability

No changes to the basic game (and that’s all I play).

A lefty/ righty card for each player.

Manager calls steal in basic baseball.

Better Park effects, Whether and clutch hitting effects for the MG Baseball

I’d really like to see individual defense ratings in soccer.

i dont think there is any one thing that i would change, the game is fun the way it is.

For the baseball game, I would like to see a more useful Windows 7 game. I really like having the stat line on the baseball cards. For the football game, when if ever will we have the computer game back?

I add the Unusual Play Card, Error Distribution Card, and Extra-Base Hit Distribution Chart.

Make the hockey game more accurate Have players other than the skill players have an effect on football.

More individual great teams and sell them as singles not sets. Sets with only playoff teams for the prior year. Oops thats two.

return the cards to the original formats and move the GameCo back to Lancaster.. :)

More "Specialty"-type teams available…OFAS, BATS, FAST,…those types of teams. I’d rather have a set like that than a bunch of ’52 Pirates/’79 Blue Jays teams that I’ll never use.

baseball bbw: Ability to pull infield corners in, ss/2b back runners rarely thrown out at 2b stretching a single or other scenario other than steal attempt.

A better middle game…something between basic and master.

not a thing

R/L Batter/Pitcher cards

id make it possible to name mgr for each team (in manual play) because im so sick of reading my name managing both teams in EVERY freakin game. why not be able to let larussa or even johnny keane lead the cards. it only a cosmetic change but i desire it the most.

Baseball- Pitcher’s grades. maybe having pitchers that surrender less XB hits reflect that on the card. Maybe modify the Q rating for basic game based on BF stat. I like to see the strong pitch like real life, while arms that tire after 24 batters do so. maybe some alternat rules that allow to mix things up between Basic and Master. You can do that with SOM.

Baseball – I do not particularly like the batting formulas adjusted by season (which I believe started in the early 1990′s); I prefer the batting cards be consistent across all of time. The pitcher ratings should be adjusted to achieve accurate season stats (e.g. high scoring seasons pitchers should get a an ERA credit to get the approximate same number of A-B-C-D pitchers) and same with low scoring seasons, pitchers should get an ERA penalty.

a better ability to change ratings and positions, etc. hard to do without templates — esp if reverse engineering the processes

Change the way the outfielders are listed. Instead of the generic OF each player should have a separate position/rating. Ex: LF (3) CF (2)

nothing

Baseball (maybe all sports) real "boards". I hate the spiral books.

more pre 1900 baseball sets

Return the BB card design to the style used between 2001 & 2010. Make a computer game compatible with a 64 bit operating system.

I would like to see a thumbnail mug shot of each player on his card. I own most of the Great Teams of Past teams pertinent to baseball. I remember I could purchase one team at a time if I wanted to. Using members of the Baseball Hall of Fame as a guideline, I would like to see APBA issue "sets" for individual players. In other words, make it possible to purchase every Ernie Banks card at the same time in one envelope. These "sets" could be a premium item for the APBA Game Company In other words a customer could purchase the individual player "set" just like he purchased the GTOP series. A purchase just Banks or he could purchase Banks, Kaline, Cobb and Koufax and etc.

to see if more people are playing

DOS football does not use the historical rules for the 1960s-1970s seasons I play……probably the only responder who will write about that game!

Add reinforced tabs to spiral game boards (notebook)!

To NOT have separate programs (Draft, League Manager, Stat Master) in BBW. It’s annoying having to go back and forth between programs. Wish they were "all in one".

nothing

too much statistical aberration in BBW – I think the data disks need to be tweaked to help ensure realistic results in "as played" replays

I’d like to see more non-season sets. I’ve got at least one version of all seasons issued, but my favorite sets are ones like the Hall of Fame set, OFAS, Negro League sets and GTOP. What I would like most would be career based cards with the stats normalized for the players era.

I like and use the rules that Dick Seitz developed…

have a uniform formula so different seasons can compete on a level playing field against each other.

I would like APBA to explore rating the players on a wider scale (wider than 5 points) to allow for more gradation between players. A rating of "3" for e.g. can cover everything from a back-up LB to the league’s leading tackler (D’Qwell Jackson got a 3/3 two or three years ago when he led the NFL in tackles).

Bring back Bowling.

Just keep it the way it is.

Many of the newer games are too complex. Simplify.

Large white boards maybe?

More great teams of the past and the read issuing of single column only cards

better individual defense for soccer. The result for a 7 with a man on first vs a D..’batter goes to second on throw to third." seems to happen too much for my liking ;-)

Cards for each team on which a traded player appeared. For BBW, fixed ballpark effects.

nothing

The APBA Baseball Basic Game – the ability to call for steals

BBW needs major updating

I would add more pitching grades. Somewhere between the basic and master games. Current seasons have far too many C pitchers with a wide range of ERA’s.

APBA Baseball: Rate outfielders for their exact positions. Put master symbols on cards.

Soccer game should have individual defensive ratings

The idea of making ALL seasons available is a dream come true!

More players per team

Basic game…. Find away to get pitchers more centered towards the C grade and have some kind of simple homer rating.

the fact that my wife thinks that it is silly that I am a grown man and that I still "roll dice". She just doesn’t understand.

The one thing I would change was going to be to have all seasons available for purchase. I am ecstatic that this appears to be the way the company is headed.

Return to separate base-state boards instead of booklet.

APBA should assign master game MF and Th ratings on a sliding scale with a total weighted average of +2.

Not so many reprint sets

Don’t know.

improve the computer game

In the baseball game I would base the pitchers grades using batting average against as the main component to determine their grades/ratings- not ERA/Wins or walks.

having higher graded pitchers reduce as many extra base hits as singles

Introduce lefty/righty hitting to improve realism. Also, come up with method of allowing pitcher fatigue.

More and varied play by play

Put a straight stealing option in the basic baseball game.

Master Symbols on the cards

Include the XB and XC cards together, start looking into lefty/right splits for pitchers and batters.

More play options for Master football

Baseball – Basic pitching grades are not statistcially accurate Football – Game needs an entire revamp, make the OL/DL matter Soccer – More formations, incorporate 1 V 1 attacker/defender matchups

Update to BBW so that it could be played on today’s computer. Also, revisions to the disks to include every player that played each season. An Internet option for league play to allow head to head games.

Nothing

In APBA basic, there should be better incorporation of caught stealings. Along with 14*, there should be 14- or 8-. The – represents caught stealing.

Make higher quality (physically) cards, like those of the 1950s.

I am a firm believer "If it ain’t broke don’t fix it". I have been playing APBA since 1962 straight out of the box. No need to change anything IMHO.

Make injuries optional in BBW.

I have the hockey game – and hockey is my first love, but for God’s sake have you SEEN the instruction book for that game. That’s 1/2 the reason I still haven’t tried to play it. I like the golf, haven’t played it too much, but hope to get some rounds in this summer. It would certainly be nice if the cards themselves were a little nicer, more like a true BB card with player photos and logos, but I know that the licensing costs alone would kill the game, or make card sets twice the cost, so I’m good with what we have. I like how the team’s were included on the 2011 set. No more searching the lineup card to remember what the native team is for the guys you’re done with. All in all – I don’t find myself playing the BB game and thinking "I wish they…". I really think it’s pretty good for what it is and at the price level. Maybe the one thing for just this year is that the paper stock they used *feels* thinner, but I asked this specifically of the new owner and he replied it’s the same. Doesn’t feel that way, but maybe it is. So, if I had to pick one thing, it would be make the card stock just a little thicker so the cards are more durable.

I would like to see batter and pitcher cards with outcomes for L/R match ups.

get the upgrades out sooner and quicker bbw v6 is a joke already

not a thing

Greater difference in fielding (Field one should have greater difference than field two or field three) More benefit for "Z" rating for pitchers

HOCKEY – more accuracy in player names and positions played. BBW – ability to edit stats, and to save/restore a game. Earned runs are not always correct.

Updated left/right splits for all sets, and correcting some fielding column problems in the master game.

I don’t have any pet peeves about APBA products. I would like to see the Card design return the player information (Bats, Throws, Ht/Wt, Born) back to the top of the card, but that’s about it.

That I would not have to stop and go to work!

I think APBA should develop an advanced Baseball game that falls in between Basic and Master with pitching/steals but not base running like master..

?

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it…

Would like to see a revised football game, one that puts more emphasis on individual defence.

Some type of quick-play game. I have a bad back and cant sit for long periods of time.

That the company would include some of the innovations baseball fans have come up with in their instruction book as options. The company could judge which to include. I think it would be helpful.

More pitcher control over extra base hits and more singles against A rated pitchers.

Incorporate a pitcher fatigue system for both starters and relievers.

That his card results would reflect his performance regardless of how much he played during the season.

Incorporate Master Game pitching grades into the basic game.

computer football

Restore the quality of the product to what it was years ago: bigger, thicker boards; with fewer errors in the numbers.

Fielding was more like Strat in the terms of errors/range

A.In basic baseball, one could attempt the stolen base whenever one wishes. B.In football, a higher percentage of completions for the "long pass" and fewer rare plays. In addition, update the rare plays to include replay usage.

I would lower the price.

easier to read boards (old eyes) more and better variety for the results 37-41 more pre 1920 seasons and teams.

BBW needs to be brought up-to-date.

Baseball stealing system – basic game

Baseball: move away from ERA based grading and to the Opponent Batting Average allowed model.

On the computer game, use "natural" walks and strikeouts. Call the balls and strikes up to the event rather than just count 4 balls or 3 strikes. On the board game, nothing comes to mind.

Improve the quality of the football cards to where they were 3 or 4 years ago.

more injuries

I would put the Master Game symbols for the baseball game on the player cards.

Their web site.

Honestly, I would incorporate steal ratings perhaps to add a little more realism for those players that had high stolen base totals.

More strategy involved soccer and (basic) baseball

As an APBA player that has purchase EVERY baseball card set offered since I first ordered the 1973 season, I would wish the company would quit issuing past seasons that I have invested in… I don’t have much as and "investment portfolio" but I do pride myself in my APBA collection. If all seasons become available, I would be destroyed.. So many games are light years ahead of APBA and, as much as it hurts, if my purchases are not protected by the fact that it could be an investment, I WOULD jump ship… Tim Palmer stout4me@bellsouth.net

Officially incorporate some of the great ideas to enhance the basic baseball game. (as optional rules)

Baseball Master Game: Stealing attempts. 1. The way it is written, unless you’re an "A" rated stealer, you can’t steal when you’re down by 2 or more. Some teams will attempt a steal when down by 2 or more. 2. The "R" rated players. You have to be up 5-runs or more in the 9th for goodness sakes. They should eliminate the "R" and make them at least a "G".

In timing the game of football, I would change the half plays to full plays and the full plays to be worth 2 ticks. Half plays are sometimes hard to score and remember

Bring Back Single Column cards

Football (master) tends to be a bit tedious when figuring which column to use play to play, especially if trying to be realistic in moving players in and out of the lineup (both defense and offense) realistically. Football is just difficult to replay realistically so you just have to kind of go with the flow and look for general team results. If you get anal, it can take away a lot of fun. Not sure if suggested lineup for situations (4-3, nickel, dime etc. run or pass specialty players or rotations) could be published where you could generically figure rating totals before games to speed play and reduce the mental load…lol.

Change nothing

rebuild the master game – too clunky, and basic game too simple. of course, new BBW

I would make the master game a little bit easier

Pitcher IP

The owner. Ruined the game for me – I left APBA after 31 years due to the guy being an unfriendly idiot. Sad to see him screw up something good.

I would like the older version game boards.

There are situations in APBA basic where having a higher-rated pitcher on the mound causes a worse result in the PRN 1-11 range. That seems odd. I would also expand the defensive categories to more than 3. Teams with total defenses of 36 and 40 probably aren’t of the same quality defensively in real life. I would like to see APBA go to a lower-cost card model where sets can be purchased online and downloaded as PDFs.

Computer baseball – use master game platoon handicaps & add more play by play descriptions

A compuer game that is more reflective of the board game

For baseball I create my own sets using L/R splits stats. This is my main complaint with APBA. The L/R matchups are a very real part of baseball and should be reflected in the cards.

I’d like to see a simplified computer version of the basic/master game where the cards are visible as well as the dice rolls. Otherwise I’m a satisfied customer.

You’ve made the changes that I would have liked to see: putting the players stats on the card and what team did he play for are really, really, helpful. I’ve been playing the baseball game since 1958 (the ’57 season) and switched to the Master Game when it came out in 1976. I love doing replays of the 50′s and 60′s, although I have probably 95% of the reproduced all the way back to 1901. I’ve been involved in sports broadcasting for most of my career and find it extremely helpful when interviewing big league managers, coached, and retired players based on my APBA knowledge of that guy’s "card".

Make it so grade A’s give up more hits and grade D’s give up less hits. Somehow change the fielding for range. Assign positions to outfielders, not just "outfield."

A more simplified lefty-righty match up for the basic baseball game. The Master Game seems to have an awkward approach.

Move back to Lancaster. Somehow make righty/lefty cards….

reliable pitching grades (DICKEY!!)

I wish it was easy to create my own cards based on real-life stats or made-up stats.

APBA Baseball would be much better with the CMBA pitching system and a pitcher fatigue factor. The usual things, such as caught stealing frequency, individual error and arm ratings, more emphasis on individual fielding would enhance the game by leaps and bounds.

Master baseball,I would like outfield in possibillities, guarding the lines, the possibilities of the 12 being a hit even with a pl hitter, the ability to attempt a steal aith more flexibility ,and the home run pitching letter to be more randomized. ghlm.Having said those things,I think the game is wonderful. In the hockey game,I would like to see the odai matter in power ply and shorthanded situations. In Football,I would like to see an easier way of determining receivers, and a better solitaire system.

I would like to see more options in the football game (ie: short, medium, screen, long and INTERMEDIATE pass) More detail into various players and the positions they do or don’t play. I like the football game and I realize you can’t do everything to make it as realistic as possible. The league I am in has made several modifications over the year to make it better. I like the game and don’t want radical change, but I would like to see some.

Individual matchups in football

Print master game ratings on the cards

no perforated cards!

More historic football seasons available. More historic soccer seasons available. Better quality materials with the games, e.g., more durable card stock, and print that doesn’t rub off with use. Dice that fit the dice cups. Replace that ridiculous folding football field with the one that came with the game in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. I’d pay the price.

allow cardboard diamonds of your favorite ball park instead of just the field that comes with the game.

In the basic game, A pitchers and D pitchers have the same chance of giving up homeruns.

To have it marketed to the public so it doesn’t die out.

baseball

I would like to see a better computer simulation product.

That the game company adopt several of the innovations created by other individuals

Its not a easy question, for me I already use inovations and in my league use the league boards.

Better fields, dice, cups, markers.

Errors happen far too frequently in the Master Game, IMHO. I haven’t run a statistical analysis to see if that really is true, but it sure seems that way. (That damned "E-LF" Fielding Two result on a 15 is maddening). I don’t know if that is the ONE thing, but it’s the thing that has annoyed me the most over the time I’ve played. Oh, I’ll add a second, but it has been addressed my many people, even to the point of making new pitching grades: elite pitchers give up too many extra base hits. In the MG, the spread of 7s on the XBH numbers in grades 22+ just seem randomly dispersed.

There should be more wild throws on steal attempts. Also, steal success rating should not be based on the actual percentage runner stole safely, but a more realistic algorithm. For example, a base runner who stole one base in one attempt should not be rated 36. To the contrary, if he only attempted one steal, he’s probably not a good base stealer at all.

I would like APBA to be made easier to purchase by having it on Steam and in retail stores. Heck I bought 2 games yesterday for a total of $88 + tax when if I would have seen APBA in a store front I would have bought that instead. I don’t currently have a credit card but will finally be getting a prepaid one from a bank in the very near future. I filled out an application for it and look forward to finally not being left out of being able to buy certain things I want from the US. Still honestly I would much rather purchase APBA off Steam with Paypal or in stores.

Would I draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa? Besides, it’s been done.

Scrap the spiral bound book and return to the large boards.

I would give it the PR it deserves, along with a sense of national community.

have the pitchers hitting performance on their cards—have the most used 25 players per team and not 20 for the current teams–have an apba convention in vegas again—-have a way to simplify having all players in the football games having cards—the lineman are rarely used—

I’d get rid of the homeruns allowed letter grades and substitute them with a numerical plus/minus rating that can (but need not) be used in conjunction with the ball park factors. (I use a system like that for my replays.). Other than the homeruns ratings, I really find the Master Game just fine as it is.

Let left or right handed pitching mean something vs righty or lefty batter.

Add in some of the idea;s floating around for the soccer game to improve it

Would like to see all seasons available but we are getting there… Quality of card stock and printing is important. I like the font to be large and readable.

Expand and enhance the BBW game… that’s the way to grow the business. I get frustrated when I have to reenter team lineups,,,, I know it shoul be easy, but we need a good user manual and help,,, and BBW 5.75 soon…

Would like to see the Ernie Harwell broadcast feature updated for BBW

Some sort of HR/extra base hit rating for pitchers in basic game. As it is now, a Grade A&B or A&C is no different than a Grade D.

1) I’ve changed the pitcher ratings due to excessive hitting, especially of "D" pitchers. For example, if the pitcher (D)’s ERA is within 10-15 of the leagues overall ERA I bump him a grade. If bumped, this pitcher does not advance as allowed in the basic game i.e. pitches 5 scoreless innings to advance to "B" 2) no automatic advance from first to third on an "8" if hit to outfield where outfielder has a "3" rating defensively. 3) when a reliever comes in, he continues with that One grade advance rating for every batter who hits right/left when the pitcher throws from same side as hitter. Mainly I do this with teams from 1922-1941 as the hitting was astronomical…see 1930 season as example

In BBW I would like to see the actual managers be included in the disks.

I own 79 past seasons and I hope to someday own them All…. I can honestly say, I don’t know what I would change. I love this game and everything about it. I have played in a face to face league for 21 years and have played several solitaire tournaments and other types of replays. I don’t know if I would change anything!!!

Computerize to play over internet!

ZAdapt the Ricky Cobb boards into the company-issued boards. APBA should pay Ricky for this.

Don’t really think about it. I draft a team and play my team.

Why meddle with perfection? Though I do admit that I replace those tiny APBA dice with custom dice I buy for myself. Bigger and easier to read.

I wish the company would come out with a windows version for hockey, and also somehow update baseball for windows broadcast blast. Even if it means having a new announcer. I love the late Ernie Harwell as much as everyone does but it would be cool to have a new announcer if for anything else just to give the fans the option of having Ernie or another announcers and also to add the new players names since version 5.5 was update. It is annoying to hear and now up "G" or ground ball to "B", he tosses over to "P" and "S" is retired.

For all a more detailed, step by step example of play. In soccer, playing at least 20 minutes with detailed instructions showing applications of all rules and add-ons. That would be a great reference. In golf, the same would be great. A detailed step by step walk through of at least 2-3 holes that invokes every rule and add on would be great.

Make more seasons available- for all games

Football – I have the original board game and a newer version from the mid 1990′s. I have cards from each version. At this point I really don’t know what version to play and what cards fit which version. I wish there was a "converter" that allowed me to use all my cards on one set of boards.

Change the error numbers for fielding one infielders with none, one or two out with a roll.

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head, I’ll probably think of something as I am rolling the dice.

I like the game as it is as it lets me use a mix of teams from different eras without having to do a lot of work. Otherwise a team from 1932 mixes well with a team from 1997. I like that aspect of the game. That being said, I wouldn’t change anything.

base pitching grades on indiviual perforums not team record

Make BBW compatible to Windows 7 operating systems A good righty-lefty system for the basic game.

Baseball Masters Game- system to take into account defensive shifts

Add more grades to the APBA Basic pitching system

fatigue rating for pitchers, specifically carry over to subsequent games in replays

A return to the design and layout of the older baseball cards. I really don’t like the look of the newer style (with the green text)

I would like to be able to make a custom teams. The SF Giants first 25 years or 50 years team. The best of the KC A’s etc. This would be true for the other sports as well.

in the basic game institute some type of control to reflect accurate base stealing

I’d like split ratings for pitchers to create more categories and to fine tune the Basic pitching. Smith A/B (A with bases empty, B with runners on…) Jones B Johnson B/C I would also like the strikeout locations to be easier to locate and recall. Do away with the K and go to an XXY or a XXXY. Caught stealings.

Too long without being a factor in the computer gaming market. Their product is old and outdated.

incorporate cards and dice rolls into BBW

Stats (season and DOB,birthplace) easily readable on ALL cards, regular and "extra" cards

Mac-compatible baseball game

I want to know why APBA discontinued its computer football game. For me it was the best and only way to replay past seasons, or great teams of the past, etc.

get more individualized pitching in the basic game; pitchers able to stop extra-base hits including realism of homers allowed.

The Great APBA Fan Survey: Buying, Selling and Collecting

I forget how many this is now, fourth?  You can see all the results I have posted so far here

I didn’t think that this section, Buying, Selling and Collecting would THAT interesting but it turned out to be one the more intriguing sections.  No doubt, Mr Herson will be paying attention.

Do you ever buy APBA products on online auction sites like Ebay?

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 196 54.14%
No 157 43.37%
No answer 9 2.49%

Do you ever sell your used APBA products on sites like Ebay?

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 76 20.99%
No 281 77.62%
No answer 5 1.38%

Comments:  While most of us (myself included) have bought APBA card sets and the like on sites like Ebay, there is a much smaller subset who are on the selling end of the transaction.

Do you buy APBA products for the expressed purpose of collecting them (and not playing them)?

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 50 13.85%
No 305 84.49%
No answer 6 1.66%

Comments:  The “yes” count might seem low but to me, it’s significant.  Out of the 400 people who took the survey, 50 buy a card set and don’t play it.  I know people who would buy two sets.  They would play with one and stored the other one away to never be opened.  Of course, that was before reprints became so prevalent.  I, for one thank you, APBA but those who collected them for years probably have a different opinion.

Do you make a point to buy the card set of each year once APBA publishes them?

Answer Count Percentage
I always order the current card set 112 28.00%
Occasionally, I’ll buy the set if there is a reason I’m excited about the season 95 23.75%
Not really.  I’ve got plenty of past seasons I’m catching up with 139 34.75%

Comments:  This question was similar to the last but yet different.  Some of us will buy card sets every year either out of principle or to have access to the cards.  Others may concentrate on past seasons.

Looks like it’s evenly split.  I think from a business standpoint, APBA is making a good move to open up the past seasons by issuing reprints.

Have you ever bought non-APBA branded products (i.e. "knock-offs") to play with APBA?

Answer Count Percentage
Yes 154 42.66%
No 202 55.96%
No answer 5 1.39%

Comments:  A tense question when it comes to the Company, I’m sure.  I know I bought Golf cards from someone at one point.  There are bigger issues when it comes to knockoff baseball sets that infringe on APBA’s intellectual property turf.

However, sometimes it’s a tough call when it’s a product not being offered by anyone.

If APBA came out with an online product, would sign up for it?

Answer Count Percentage
No, I’m not interested 108 27.00%
I would try it if there was a free trial version 171 42.75%
Yes!  I’m ready!! 75 18.75%

Comments:  It would be interesting to see if/when APBA goes this route.  If so, it looks like they would have plenty of customers willing to at least give it a try.

Is there a different sport you would like to see simulated by APBA? If so, what is it?

No  49
College Sports 13
Auto/NASCAR/Formula One 13
New Basketball 12
Boxing 12
Horse Racing 8

These numbers are a tad approximated due to the free form way they were entered but I think I tabulated them pretty well.

By far, the “Nos”  have it.  I giggled at the person who wrote “Nooooooooooooooo”.   Other than that, the most frequent answer was NCAA football and basketball.  Auto racing was pretty popular which shouldn’t surprise anyone.  A lot of people were asking for a new (and better) basketball game.  The boxing one was the one the surprised me.  Horse racing still has a small following.

Others mentioned (and I’m not vouching for their seriousness):  Rugby, Australian Rules Football, Japanese Sumo wrestling, Lacrosse, Tennis, Pro Wrestling, and Cricket.

I’m assuming the person that entered “Yahtzee” was having a bit of fun.  “Tag Team Wraslin’” was a good one, too.

Next Up:  One more left (maybe two to wrap up).  It should be good, too.  It will focus on APBA and the Community and will deal with questions like how the company can market the game to young people and how we interact with each other.  And I’ll throw in the results to big question in the last one… “What one thing would you change about APBA?”  There were some good answers, I’ll tell you that much.
