Always unlucky Expos lose to trio of homers by Braves in 1994 replay [updated]

Sometimes getting lucky dice isn’t always a good thing.  Brian Cavanagh will testify to this as his 1994 Montreal Expos fell victim to some good dice rolling by the Atlanta Braves in a key pennant-clinching game.

Here’s Brian’s wrap-up:

My 1994 Expos were 3 outs away from clinching the NL east pennant so I called in John Wetteland (36 saves) to nail down the 3-2 lead at home over the second place Braves (i simulated their games minus the expo games using whatifsports.com, they finish 1994 at 94-68).

Ryan Klesko, Javy Lopez and Mark Lemke go deep back to back to back……never had that happen to me in APBA before!!! After playing all of these games this past year, I was feeling excited imaging the scene at what would have been (hopefully should’ve been) a sold out Olympic Stadium…….Butch Henry gets denied his 18th win in a ND, Wetteland falls to 2-3 (5th BS), McMichael gets the win, Wohlers the save……..

Ouch.  No doubt, Klesko and Lopez can hit the ball but Lemke’s one had to hurt.  I looked up his 1994 stats and he was a bit of a lightweight.  For the year, he had 3 homers and a .363 slugging percentage.

In the now defunct Champaign-Urbana Baseball (CUBB) League, I remember I once hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back (that’s four of ‘em) homeruns.  If I remember correctly, the hitters were, in order, Darin Erstad, Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones and Greg Vaughn.

thanks for reporting in, Brian!

[update]

we got em the next day……down three after 1 we chipped away early before rallying for a 8-3 win with Wetteland on the hill for the 9th out of good faith. Got 12 games left…..have really enjoyed this replay, especially watching the stats accumulate. First time i did this and definitly not the last. Would love to try a last place team, but my beloved Phils and the Four Aces are tough to pass up so I’m thinkin the 2011 Phillies…….

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. One time I was getting no-hit in an IAL regular season game. The 9th inning went like this, trailing 3-0, a home run, a double, a home run, a double, & another home run, game over, Chicago Champions win!!!

Then there was a perfect game in a just for fun Strat-o-Matic game back in the day. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, I let Hoyt Wilhelm, a really bad hitter bat, of course he singled, the next batter walked, and then a three run walkoff (before the term was coined). That’s when I learned, play it straight!!!

My Expos rebounded and gave the Braves a small taste of their own medicine in the rubber match. Down 3-0 after 5 against a suddenly dominant Kent Mercker, it was 3-2 going into the bottom of the 7th when the Expos rallied for 3 runs in the 7th and 3 more insurance runs in the 8th to take a 8-3 lead. out of good faith I put John Wetteland on the mound for the last 3 outs even though it wasnt a save situation. A 1-2-3 9th gave the 1994 Expos their 95th win of my replay season, one more win than Braves will finish with. I proudly raised my arms in celebration and imagined the mob scene at the mound as Olympic Stadium would have erupted for Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Marquis Grissom and the rest of the team. Just one more step closer to righting one the biggest wrongs in baseball history……
