Last night, it was a treat to have my buddy John Brandeberry help me out with the Monster-Terribles project. I gave him the Monsters, of course and they responded with quite an offensive display winning 20-0. Starter Ed Walsh did what he does best by pitching a one-hitter (thank you, Mike Fischlin!)

WP- ‘08 Walsh (1-0), LP- ‘62 Miller (0-1) HR- ‘80 Brett (3, GS)
Monsters Highlights: ‘80 George Brett hit his third homerun of the series. It was a grandslam in the ninth inning to pile on. ‘31 Josh Gibson collected six hits and scored four times. ‘41 Ted Williams made his first start and went 2 for 3 with 4 rbis.
Terribles Highlights: The Terribles made it as far as third base for the first time this season. ‘66 Rick Monday walked and stole second then was moved over on a error on ‘22 Rogers Hornsby. ‘78 Mike Fischlin got the sole hit in the game for the Terribles and it’s not his first of the season. He’s tied for the team lead with two.
Around the dugout
Speaking of ‘22 Hornsby, ‘11 Ty Cobb wants to know what’s going on with him. While Cobb is 10 for 19 for the initial three-game series, Hornsby is hitting .222 in 18 at-bats with no extra-base hits. “…and that error was inexcusable”, Cobb was overheard saying. “We have ‘01 Lajoie ready to go anytime”.
However, Cobb does like the work of thirdbaseman ‘80 George Brett though. “His hairdo is kind of funny but this “Brett” person can hit.” After three games, Brett is 7 for 14 with three homeruns and 10 rbis.
Tuesday Terribles outfielder ‘67 Reggie Jackson wasn’t too pleased at being benched for game 3. “I’m the only Terribles player leading the league in any category”, he proudly claimed. ‘67 Johnny Bench teased him “Yeah, no one else has gotten hit by a pitch yet.”
Jackson had to be reminded that he tied with ‘66 Johnny Herrsnstein in the polling. Herrnstein vindicated himself by being the first baserunner in game 3 when he walked in the fourth inning. As for Jackson, he got his chance. He pinch hit in the ninth with runners on first and second and grounded out.
The season now moves to Winners Park for a three game set.
