The Great APBA Fan Survey: What would you change about the APBA game? (long)

I’m almost done with the survey results of the Great APBA Fan Survey.  I have one more set of questions to publish.  There were a few questions like this one though that aren’t so easily graphed.  So I’m just publishing the answers as is.

Here was the full question:

If there was one thing you could change about the APBA Game (baseball, football, soccer, whatever you play), what would it be?

Over 280 people answered this question and you get to read every one if you want.

better fielding system

I WOULD MAKE ALL OF THE CARDS SETS AVAILABLE AND SELL EVEN SETS BY THE DECADE SO YOU COULD BUY 10 YEARS AT ONCE AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE. I WOULD KEEP THE CARDS THE TRADITIONAL WAY NO ADDING STATS TO THE CARDS…

They need to get the new version of BBW out!

I would want a computer recreation of the card-based master game that works on Mac and Windows (and iPad or Android tablet), internet-capable, so I could play "face-to-face" over the internet.

Make the baseball game more realistic. Too many errors, no range factor for fielders, unusual numbers & error numbers should be random, base stealing should incorporate pitcher’s ability to hold runners & catcher’s caught stealing percentage, there should be more than four basic pitcher’s grades, home runs allowed should be a part of the basic game, and pitcher’s should get fatigued as the games go on.

Baseball-fatigue system for pitchers. Regrade pitchers of old sets to conform with recent grading criteria.

nothing

Updated BBW…but not based strictly on the board game…keeping the variables that Miller Assoc. introduced.

I would like to see the fielding range and error freguency seperated and not be dependent on base situation

update the computer version of baseball to meet 21st century standards. Not graphically but user interface etc.

Add another pitching grade for Basic baseball.

fix the injuries…same position players get hurt all the time..they need a injury book

Upgrade Baseball and a new Football version.

Errors in baseball’s basic game, left right splits in basic Individual defensive ratings in soccer

upgraded BBW game

Pitching isn’t realistic enough. I think pitching is the key to the game and the simple rating system isn’t enough, at the same time the Master game is not for me.

I’d like to see BBW updated.

update basic game boards

I would like to see individual defensive ratings incorporated into the soccer game – don’t know how best to do that, but I’d love to see it done.

i always wanted to play the basic board game ( with dice and cards shown) on the computer.

Nothing…love the game!

I would say limit double plays and the old cards strikeout too much against newer sets. The new cards i wont even buy because of lack of walks,7’s on a 55 for a .300 plus batting average hitter. The new cards aren’t worth buying since they cant compete with the old ones.

satisfied as is…

A simplified version of APBA Basketball. I tried APBA Basketball in the mid 1990’s, but found it way to time consuming. I currently play APBA Baseball, Football, and Hockey, but use Strat-o-Matic Basketball for my basketball replays.

I’d like to see a card set made each year from the previous season like they do now but using the 50/50 system. In other words half the results off the pitchers card half off the batters card. More fun for platooning that way. I know there are other games out there that do this but they get too complicated with there range ratings, pitcher fatigue and other things I don’t care as much about. They could just offer this as another optional card set but keep the basic game simple as is.

I would like the opportunity to merge BBW and Dice BB together. For example, say I want to replay a season but don’t have time to roll all the games for all the teams in a season. SO if I could play a portion of the season using the computer game to Easily add to the D&C results, that might be cool.

more fringe players

It may actually be the perfect game, besides actual real-life baseball!

Can’t think of anything

Include all the players rather than just having 20 and having to buy the extra players that you need to really play the game right.

As a Basic Game replayer, I would love to see the game company settle on an RP-number random generator. However, I’m too true to the idea of ‘pure APBA’ in the form of the Basic Game to really be bothered about it.

Computer game should give you a better idea of the chances of success of baserunning options

I would make more older sets available

I’d like to see the big boards return. I realize it may not be cost effective but I like them.

Nothing

More pitching grades in the basic game.

No

Baseball, I like it the way it is.

buy GTOP as single teams again

I grew up playing APBA baseball with my dad & played it off on for a number of years.I have Strat & do enjoy it but like the solo play of APBA better. The last set I bought was the 30s&50s decade sets. I was very disappointed, there were names missing from the cards. I don’t like the fact tht APBA won’t include its Master game with Basic game, like Stratomatic. I’m excited about the new direction, Stratomatic has done a good job marketing, they have been a better advertiser than APBA. I hope that changes with new direction. Still enjoy cards & dice;)

Blend the Master game with the Basic for baseball and offer it as an optional game

Have a computer version of the Basic Baseball Game

Go back to the larger more basic boards. Easier to handle and read.

I don’t know. I like it the way it is.

Redesign the football game to have more individual impacts and allow for much greater difference based on team defense and offense ratings.

I don’t like the changes made a few years ago when the K was added and the boards were changed. I think they should revert to the older system…it really changes things when using old cards with new boards and/or new cards with the old boards. I think the change was too drastic. The changes to the Hit & Run boards also bother me. I think it would be nice if team names were printed on the cards.

I think the Baseball game is a great game, easy to learn, easy to master and a lot of fun. I recently purchased the newer version of the situation booklet and find that to be a little more realistic than the older version I was using. Overall, I wouldn’t really change anything but I am not a left-brain thinker!

Baseball – Put the master symbols on the cards

BBW – Needs a play-by-play scorekeeping printout (the script is too long)

Fix the bugs in BBW, which is in the process of being done. Add bells and whistles to the game. Players pics and such. Have all reports available to print in HTML. Have a recap for each individual game. New announcer that can say all names. Bring all the stat information full commentary gives to light commentary and leave out the added useless info Ernie spouts.

Create format to play carded game with computer based statistic collating. (I think I want this and then I wonder if half of my enjoyment is manually collating and entering the game stats myself)

have no real desire to change it.

BBW–let me know the runner chances!

dude up grade the BBW

Game is fine but update the website!

No Soccer. Serious Answer: Not sure. I am relatively satisfied.

For APBA Baseball I would change it so you can call a steak whenever you want to.

The box!! The boxes APBA uses are the worst.

incorporate some type of hold rating for potential base stealers in master game

Consistant quality of cards. More football seasons.

I would sell the master game in a bundle with the basic game.

add a little more pitching realism to the basic game

Less penalties in football.

Should have a Career Database…………APBA is missing the boat with having us buy all these things from outside of APBA Give us OPTIONS: We want big white boards? Sell them to us…. We want MG symbols on the cards…..sell them to us Make a Hybrid MG-BG; its soooooo easy! And fix the BAVG/SLG/OBA to the correct BAVG/OBA/SLG for cryin out loud. Website: bring back the color brochure; sample player card; descriptions of each season. Utilize the website to all its potential. Create an APBA "Round Table" where John Herson can conference with a group of APBA players for ideas and input.

Only use the font that started in 1970 and ended in 1985 I could read so much better.LOL or maybe use the font from original 1963 or 1964 when printing an new season.

Just a little fine-tuning of the basic baseball game.

Increase basic game pitchers gardes

The font of the cards and master symbols for my aging eyes.

Get someone to proofread that stuff–it’s embarrassing to see fuck ups on the website and newsletters. Hell, I’d do it for free.

upate the basic baseball basic game some. Add more rare plays, pitch.er fatigue system

For basic game, make Grade A pitchers less dominant & grade D just a little better. Also would like to be able to buy only updated charts w/o buying new game. Also teams s/b 24/25 players instead of 20. Shouldn’t have to buy extra players.

I like it the way it is. Any modifications I have made or used have been at my discretion to make my replays more enjoyable. The APBA game model is just fine the way it is.

I’ve spent a lot of time molding the APBA Master Baseball Game into the game I want to play. I’ve regraded pitchers, altered position players’ numbers and even scrapped some of the board results, replacing them with some of my own design. In answer to your question, I’ve already done it.

At the moment, nothing.

For baseball, I would like to see some sort of fatigue system for pitchers in the basic game. For soccer, mostly just a more clear instructions manuel. Instructions seem vague and incomplete. Also would like to see stats — particularly number of starts — on the cards, like baseball. That way it would be easier to tell which particular formation a club liked to utilize most often.

Primarily BBW. The only thing I might change, is maybe a little more animation to the game. That really would be a can of worms that doesn’t really need opened though LOL

BBW – More module compatibility with Word/Excel and a career record keeping module

Baseball Master Game – should be a "ballpark" result on batter card (1/36 similar to 36-41), and each stadium with own card, reroll for result … a "50" like soccer, maybe? Soccer – a master version with more formation effects instead of just the three, improved shot distribution and statistical accuracy. Should have tested it more before publication. You KNOW I’m right about that last one!

Computer football game

Find some way to reduce the time it takes to play a complete game. Our league is losing players due to the time it takes to play. Also this year the travel has come into play with gas going back to $4 a gallon. So if there was a PC game available or a method of playing over the web it might help in interest and all around.

I play the BG. The MG is more complex than I like, but I would like to see the BG have a few of the MG options. (1) Add MG stealing. (2) Pitcher fatigue Q factor. (3) More rare plays in BG. I will probably do a replay one year with these changes.

in football i would like to be able to keep more defensive stats such as tackels and forced fumbles. in addition to sacks and int’s. also wish the fumbles recoveries and int’s weren’t generic and more to what they had in real life wherever possible.

Cut down on the 1-3 play result

Nothing

I would really like to see a computer game, and NOT the current game. Something that has the cards and dice, like the one on your site. Basically the table version on a PC, rather MAC.

better service from the company

nothing really

An accurate computer representation of the APBA Basic game

Keep the 12 in the same location on the card every year. I hate it when they put the 12 at a location where we have learned to expect a specific result, like 12, 32, 52, etc. Since they now print the year on the card there is no reason to move the 12 around to be able to tell what year it was.

Nothing.

Have Herson sell the gameco to Jim Sce.

I would prefer going back to the "old" days of large boards and thicker cards. It’s is my only vice so I don’t care about spending more money to enjoy this hobby.

update baseball wizard to work with 5.75

Create a version between the Basic Game & Master Game

I’d really like to see more people play the game. Sometimes as a 27 year old I feel like i’m on an island playing the game. I’d also like to see APBA move more toward the 21st century with perhaps an online game.

Expanded fielding ratings to discern from errors and playmaking ability

No changes to the basic game (and that’s all I play).

A lefty/ righty card for each player.

Manager calls steal in basic baseball.

Better Park effects, Whether and clutch hitting effects for the MG Baseball

I’d really like to see individual defense ratings in soccer.

i dont think there is any one thing that i would change, the game is fun the way it is.

For the baseball game, I would like to see a more useful Windows 7 game. I really like having the stat line on the baseball cards. For the football game, when if ever will we have the computer game back?

I add the Unusual Play Card, Error Distribution Card, and Extra-Base Hit Distribution Chart.

Make the hockey game more accurate Have players other than the skill players have an effect on football.

More individual great teams and sell them as singles not sets. Sets with only playoff teams for the prior year. Oops thats two.

return the cards to the original formats and move the GameCo back to Lancaster.. :)

More "Specialty"-type teams available…OFAS, BATS, FAST,…those types of teams. I’d rather have a set like that than a bunch of ’52 Pirates/’79 Blue Jays teams that I’ll never use.

baseball bbw: Ability to pull infield corners in, ss/2b back runners rarely thrown out at 2b stretching a single or other scenario other than steal attempt.

A better middle game…something between basic and master.

not a thing

R/L Batter/Pitcher cards

id make it possible to name mgr for each team (in manual play) because im so sick of reading my name managing both teams in EVERY freakin game. why not be able to let larussa or even johnny keane lead the cards. it only a cosmetic change but i desire it the most.

Baseball- Pitcher’s grades. maybe having pitchers that surrender less XB hits reflect that on the card. Maybe modify the Q rating for basic game based on BF stat. I like to see the strong pitch like real life, while arms that tire after 24 batters do so. maybe some alternat rules that allow to mix things up between Basic and Master. You can do that with SOM.

Baseball – I do not particularly like the batting formulas adjusted by season (which I believe started in the early 1990’s); I prefer the batting cards be consistent across all of time. The pitcher ratings should be adjusted to achieve accurate season stats (e.g. high scoring seasons pitchers should get a an ERA credit to get the approximate same number of A-B-C-D pitchers) and same with low scoring seasons, pitchers should get an ERA penalty.

a better ability to change ratings and positions, etc. hard to do without templates — esp if reverse engineering the processes

Change the way the outfielders are listed. Instead of the generic OF each player should have a separate position/rating. Ex: LF (3) CF (2)

nothing

Baseball (maybe all sports) real "boards". I hate the spiral books.

more pre 1900 baseball sets

Return the BB card design to the style used between 2001 & 2010. Make a computer game compatible with a 64 bit operating system.

I would like to see a thumbnail mug shot of each player on his card. I own most of the Great Teams of Past teams pertinent to baseball. I remember I could purchase one team at a time if I wanted to. Using members of the Baseball Hall of Fame as a guideline, I would like to see APBA issue "sets" for individual players. In other words, make it possible to purchase every Ernie Banks card at the same time in one envelope. These "sets" could be a premium item for the APBA Game Company In other words a customer could purchase the individual player "set" just like he purchased the GTOP series. A purchase just Banks or he could purchase Banks, Kaline, Cobb and Koufax and etc.

to see if more people are playing

DOS football does not use the historical rules for the 1960s-1970s seasons I play……probably the only responder who will write about that game!

Add reinforced tabs to spiral game boards (notebook)!

To NOT have separate programs (Draft, League Manager, Stat Master) in BBW. It’s annoying having to go back and forth between programs. Wish they were "all in one".

nothing

too much statistical aberration in BBW – I think the data disks need to be tweaked to help ensure realistic results in "as played" replays

I’d like to see more non-season sets. I’ve got at least one version of all seasons issued, but my favorite sets are ones like the Hall of Fame set, OFAS, Negro League sets and GTOP. What I would like most would be career based cards with the stats normalized for the players era.

I like and use the rules that Dick Seitz developed…

have a uniform formula so different seasons can compete on a level playing field against each other.

I would like APBA to explore rating the players on a wider scale (wider than 5 points) to allow for more gradation between players. A rating of "3" for e.g. can cover everything from a back-up LB to the league’s leading tackler (D’Qwell Jackson got a 3/3 two or three years ago when he led the NFL in tackles).

Bring back Bowling.

Just keep it the way it is.

Many of the newer games are too complex. Simplify.

Large white boards maybe?

More great teams of the past and the read issuing of single column only cards

better individual defense for soccer. The result for a 7 with a man on first vs a D..’batter goes to second on throw to third." seems to happen too much for my liking ;-)

Cards for each team on which a traded player appeared. For BBW, fixed ballpark effects.

nothing

The APBA Baseball Basic Game – the ability to call for steals

BBW needs major updating

I would add more pitching grades. Somewhere between the basic and master games. Current seasons have far too many C pitchers with a wide range of ERA’s.

APBA Baseball: Rate outfielders for their exact positions. Put master symbols on cards.

Soccer game should have individual defensive ratings

The idea of making ALL seasons available is a dream come true!

More players per team

Basic game…. Find away to get pitchers more centered towards the C grade and have some kind of simple homer rating.

the fact that my wife thinks that it is silly that I am a grown man and that I still "roll dice". She just doesn’t understand.

The one thing I would change was going to be to have all seasons available for purchase. I am ecstatic that this appears to be the way the company is headed.

Return to separate base-state boards instead of booklet.

APBA should assign master game MF and Th ratings on a sliding scale with a total weighted average of +2.

Not so many reprint sets

Don’t know.

improve the computer game

In the baseball game I would base the pitchers grades using batting average against as the main component to determine their grades/ratings- not ERA/Wins or walks.

having higher graded pitchers reduce as many extra base hits as singles

Introduce lefty/righty hitting to improve realism. Also, come up with method of allowing pitcher fatigue.

More and varied play by play

Put a straight stealing option in the basic baseball game.

Master Symbols on the cards

Include the XB and XC cards together, start looking into lefty/right splits for pitchers and batters.

More play options for Master football

Baseball – Basic pitching grades are not statistcially accurate Football – Game needs an entire revamp, make the OL/DL matter Soccer – More formations, incorporate 1 V 1 attacker/defender matchups

Update to BBW so that it could be played on today’s computer. Also, revisions to the disks to include every player that played each season. An Internet option for league play to allow head to head games.

Nothing

In APBA basic, there should be better incorporation of caught stealings. Along with 14*, there should be 14- or 8-. The – represents caught stealing.

Make higher quality (physically) cards, like those of the 1950s.

I am a firm believer "If it ain’t broke don’t fix it". I have been playing APBA since 1962 straight out of the box. No need to change anything IMHO.

Make injuries optional in BBW.

I have the hockey game – and hockey is my first love, but for God’s sake have you SEEN the instruction book for that game. That’s 1/2 the reason I still haven’t tried to play it. I like the golf, haven’t played it too much, but hope to get some rounds in this summer. It would certainly be nice if the cards themselves were a little nicer, more like a true BB card with player photos and logos, but I know that the licensing costs alone would kill the game, or make card sets twice the cost, so I’m good with what we have. I like how the team’s were included on the 2011 set. No more searching the lineup card to remember what the native team is for the guys you’re done with. All in all – I don’t find myself playing the BB game and thinking "I wish they…". I really think it’s pretty good for what it is and at the price level. Maybe the one thing for just this year is that the paper stock they used *feels* thinner, but I asked this specifically of the new owner and he replied it’s the same. Doesn’t feel that way, but maybe it is. So, if I had to pick one thing, it would be make the card stock just a little thicker so the cards are more durable.

I would like to see batter and pitcher cards with outcomes for L/R match ups.

get the upgrades out sooner and quicker bbw v6 is a joke already

not a thing

Greater difference in fielding (Field one should have greater difference than field two or field three) More benefit for "Z" rating for pitchers

HOCKEY – more accuracy in player names and positions played. BBW – ability to edit stats, and to save/restore a game. Earned runs are not always correct.

Updated left/right splits for all sets, and correcting some fielding column problems in the master game.

I don’t have any pet peeves about APBA products. I would like to see the Card design return the player information (Bats, Throws, Ht/Wt, Born) back to the top of the card, but that’s about it.

That I would not have to stop and go to work!

I think APBA should develop an advanced Baseball game that falls in between Basic and Master with pitching/steals but not base running like master..

?

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it…

Would like to see a revised football game, one that puts more emphasis on individual defence.

Some type of quick-play game. I have a bad back and cant sit for long periods of time.

That the company would include some of the innovations baseball fans have come up with in their instruction book as options. The company could judge which to include. I think it would be helpful.

More pitcher control over extra base hits and more singles against A rated pitchers.

Incorporate a pitcher fatigue system for both starters and relievers.

That his card results would reflect his performance regardless of how much he played during the season.

Incorporate Master Game pitching grades into the basic game.

computer football

Restore the quality of the product to what it was years ago: bigger, thicker boards; with fewer errors in the numbers.

Fielding was more like Strat in the terms of errors/range

A.In basic baseball, one could attempt the stolen base whenever one wishes. B.In football, a higher percentage of completions for the "long pass" and fewer rare plays. In addition, update the rare plays to include replay usage.

I would lower the price.

easier to read boards (old eyes) more and better variety for the results 37-41 more pre 1920 seasons and teams.

BBW needs to be brought up-to-date.

Baseball stealing system – basic game

Baseball: move away from ERA based grading and to the Opponent Batting Average allowed model.

On the computer game, use "natural" walks and strikeouts. Call the balls and strikes up to the event rather than just count 4 balls or 3 strikes. On the board game, nothing comes to mind.

Improve the quality of the football cards to where they were 3 or 4 years ago.

more injuries

I would put the Master Game symbols for the baseball game on the player cards.

Their web site.

Honestly, I would incorporate steal ratings perhaps to add a little more realism for those players that had high stolen base totals.

More strategy involved soccer and (basic) baseball

As an APBA player that has purchase EVERY baseball card set offered since I first ordered the 1973 season, I would wish the company would quit issuing past seasons that I have invested in… I don’t have much as and "investment portfolio" but I do pride myself in my APBA collection. If all seasons become available, I would be destroyed.. So many games are light years ahead of APBA and, as much as it hurts, if my purchases are not protected by the fact that it could be an investment, I WOULD jump ship… Tim Palmer

Officially incorporate some of the great ideas to enhance the basic baseball game. (as optional rules)

Baseball Master Game: Stealing attempts. 1. The way it is written, unless you’re an "A" rated stealer, you can’t steal when you’re down by 2 or more. Some teams will attempt a steal when down by 2 or more. 2. The "R" rated players. You have to be up 5-runs or more in the 9th for goodness sakes. They should eliminate the "R" and make them at least a "G".

In timing the game of football, I would change the half plays to full plays and the full plays to be worth 2 ticks. Half plays are sometimes hard to score and remember

Bring Back Single Column cards

Football (master) tends to be a bit tedious when figuring which column to use play to play, especially if trying to be realistic in moving players in and out of the lineup (both defense and offense) realistically. Football is just difficult to replay realistically so you just have to kind of go with the flow and look for general team results. If you get anal, it can take away a lot of fun. Not sure if suggested lineup for situations (4-3, nickel, dime etc. run or pass specialty players or rotations) could be published where you could generically figure rating totals before games to speed play and reduce the mental load…lol.

Change nothing

rebuild the master game – too clunky, and basic game too simple. of course, new BBW

I would make the master game a little bit easier

Pitcher IP

The owner. Ruined the game for me – I left APBA after 31 years due to the guy being an unfriendly idiot. Sad to see him screw up something good.

I would like the older version game boards.

There are situations in APBA basic where having a higher-rated pitcher on the mound causes a worse result in the PRN 1-11 range. That seems odd. I would also expand the defensive categories to more than 3. Teams with total defenses of 36 and 40 probably aren’t of the same quality defensively in real life. I would like to see APBA go to a lower-cost card model where sets can be purchased online and downloaded as PDFs.

Computer baseball – use master game platoon handicaps & add more play by play descriptions

A compuer game that is more reflective of the board game

For baseball I create my own sets using L/R splits stats. This is my main complaint with APBA. The L/R matchups are a very real part of baseball and should be reflected in the cards.

I’d like to see a simplified computer version of the basic/master game where the cards are visible as well as the dice rolls. Otherwise I’m a satisfied customer.

You’ve made the changes that I would have liked to see: putting the players stats on the card and what team did he play for are really, really, helpful. I’ve been playing the baseball game since 1958 (the ’57 season) and switched to the Master Game when it came out in 1976. I love doing replays of the 50’s and 60’s, although I have probably 95% of the reproduced all the way back to 1901. I’ve been involved in sports broadcasting for most of my career and find it extremely helpful when interviewing big league managers, coached, and retired players based on my APBA knowledge of that guy’s "card".

Make it so grade A’s give up more hits and grade D’s give up less hits. Somehow change the fielding for range. Assign positions to outfielders, not just "outfield."

A more simplified lefty-righty match up for the basic baseball game. The Master Game seems to have an awkward approach.

Move back to Lancaster. Somehow make righty/lefty cards….

reliable pitching grades (DICKEY!!)

I wish it was easy to create my own cards based on real-life stats or made-up stats.

APBA Baseball would be much better with the CMBA pitching system and a pitcher fatigue factor. The usual things, such as caught stealing frequency, individual error and arm ratings, more emphasis on individual fielding would enhance the game by leaps and bounds.

Master baseball,I would like outfield in possibillities, guarding the lines, the possibilities of the 12 being a hit even with a pl hitter, the ability to attempt a steal aith more flexibility ,and the home run pitching letter to be more randomized. ghlm.Having said those things,I think the game is wonderful. In the hockey game,I would like to see the odai matter in power ply and shorthanded situations. In Football,I would like to see an easier way of determining receivers, and a better solitaire system.

I would like to see more options in the football game (ie: short, medium, screen, long and INTERMEDIATE pass) More detail into various players and the positions they do or don’t play. I like the football game and I realize you can’t do everything to make it as realistic as possible. The league I am in has made several modifications over the year to make it better. I like the game and don’t want radical change, but I would like to see some.

Individual matchups in football

Print master game ratings on the cards

no perforated cards!

More historic football seasons available. More historic soccer seasons available. Better quality materials with the games, e.g., more durable card stock, and print that doesn’t rub off with use. Dice that fit the dice cups. Replace that ridiculous folding football field with the one that came with the game in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. I’d pay the price.

allow cardboard diamonds of your favorite ball park instead of just the field that comes with the game.

In the basic game, A pitchers and D pitchers have the same chance of giving up homeruns.

To have it marketed to the public so it doesn’t die out.

baseball

I would like to see a better computer simulation product.

That the game company adopt several of the innovations created by other individuals

Its not a easy question, for me I already use inovations and in my league use the league boards.

Better fields, dice, cups, markers.

Errors happen far too frequently in the Master Game, IMHO. I haven’t run a statistical analysis to see if that really is true, but it sure seems that way. (That damned "E-LF" Fielding Two result on a 15 is maddening). I don’t know if that is the ONE thing, but it’s the thing that has annoyed me the most over the time I’ve played. Oh, I’ll add a second, but it has been addressed my many people, even to the point of making new pitching grades: elite pitchers give up too many extra base hits. In the MG, the spread of 7s on the XBH numbers in grades 22+ just seem randomly dispersed.

There should be more wild throws on steal attempts. Also, steal success rating should not be based on the actual percentage runner stole safely, but a more realistic algorithm. For example, a base runner who stole one base in one attempt should not be rated 36. To the contrary, if he only attempted one steal, he’s probably not a good base stealer at all.

I would like APBA to be made easier to purchase by having it on Steam and in retail stores. Heck I bought 2 games yesterday for a total of $88 + tax when if I would have seen APBA in a store front I would have bought that instead. I don’t currently have a credit card but will finally be getting a prepaid one from a bank in the very near future. I filled out an application for it and look forward to finally not being left out of being able to buy certain things I want from the US. Still honestly I would much rather purchase APBA off Steam with Paypal or in stores.

Would I draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa? Besides, it’s been done.

Scrap the spiral bound book and return to the large boards.

I would give it the PR it deserves, along with a sense of national community.

have the pitchers hitting performance on their cards—have the most used 25 players per team and not 20 for the current teams–have an apba convention in vegas again—-have a way to simplify having all players in the football games having cards—the lineman are rarely used—

I’d get rid of the homeruns allowed letter grades and substitute them with a numerical plus/minus rating that can (but need not) be used in conjunction with the ball park factors. (I use a system like that for my replays.). Other than the homeruns ratings, I really find the Master Game just fine as it is.

Let left or right handed pitching mean something vs righty or lefty batter.

Add in some of the idea;s floating around for the soccer game to improve it

Would like to see all seasons available but we are getting there… Quality of card stock and printing is important. I like the font to be large and readable.

Expand and enhance the BBW game… that’s the way to grow the business. I get frustrated when I have to reenter team lineups,,,, I know it shoul be easy, but we need a good user manual and help,,, and BBW 5.75 soon…

Would like to see the Ernie Harwell broadcast feature updated for BBW

Some sort of HR/extra base hit rating for pitchers in basic game. As it is now, a Grade A&B or A&C is no different than a Grade D.

1) I’ve changed the pitcher ratings due to excessive hitting, especially of "D" pitchers. For example, if the pitcher (D)’s ERA is within 10-15 of the leagues overall ERA I bump him a grade. If bumped, this pitcher does not advance as allowed in the basic game i.e. pitches 5 scoreless innings to advance to "B" 2) no automatic advance from first to third on an "8" if hit to outfield where outfielder has a "3" rating defensively. 3) when a reliever comes in, he continues with that One grade advance rating for every batter who hits right/left when the pitcher throws from same side as hitter. Mainly I do this with teams from 1922-1941 as the hitting was astronomical…see 1930 season as example

In BBW I would like to see the actual managers be included in the disks.

I own 79 past seasons and I hope to someday own them All…. I can honestly say, I don’t know what I would change. I love this game and everything about it. I have played in a face to face league for 21 years and have played several solitaire tournaments and other types of replays. I don’t know if I would change anything!!!

Computerize to play over internet!

ZAdapt the Ricky Cobb boards into the company-issued boards. APBA should pay Ricky for this.

Don’t really think about it. I draft a team and play my team.

Why meddle with perfection? Though I do admit that I replace those tiny APBA dice with custom dice I buy for myself. Bigger and easier to read.

I wish the company would come out with a windows version for hockey, and also somehow update baseball for windows broadcast blast. Even if it means having a new announcer. I love the late Ernie Harwell as much as everyone does but it would be cool to have a new announcer if for anything else just to give the fans the option of having Ernie or another announcers and also to add the new players names since version 5.5 was update. It is annoying to hear and now up "G" or ground ball to "B", he tosses over to "P" and "S" is retired.

For all a more detailed, step by step example of play. In soccer, playing at least 20 minutes with detailed instructions showing applications of all rules and add-ons. That would be a great reference. In golf, the same would be great. A detailed step by step walk through of at least 2-3 holes that invokes every rule and add on would be great.

Make more seasons available- for all games

Football – I have the original board game and a newer version from the mid 1990’s. I have cards from each version. At this point I really don’t know what version to play and what cards fit which version. I wish there was a "converter" that allowed me to use all my cards on one set of boards.

Change the error numbers for fielding one infielders with none, one or two out with a roll.

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head, I’ll probably think of something as I am rolling the dice.

I like the game as it is as it lets me use a mix of teams from different eras without having to do a lot of work. Otherwise a team from 1932 mixes well with a team from 1997. I like that aspect of the game. That being said, I wouldn’t change anything.

base pitching grades on indiviual perforums not team record

Make BBW compatible to Windows 7 operating systems A good righty-lefty system for the basic game.

Baseball Masters Game- system to take into account defensive shifts

Add more grades to the APBA Basic pitching system

fatigue rating for pitchers, specifically carry over to subsequent games in replays

A return to the design and layout of the older baseball cards. I really don’t like the look of the newer style (with the green text)

I would like to be able to make a custom teams. The SF Giants first 25 years or 50 years team. The best of the KC A’s etc. This would be true for the other sports as well.

in the basic game institute some type of control to reflect accurate base stealing

I’d like split ratings for pitchers to create more categories and to fine tune the Basic pitching. Smith A/B (A with bases empty, B with runners on…) Jones B Johnson B/C I would also like the strikeout locations to be easier to locate and recall. Do away with the K and go to an XXY or a XXXY. Caught stealings.

Too long without being a factor in the computer gaming market. Their product is old and outdated.

incorporate cards and dice rolls into BBW

Stats (season and DOB,birthplace) easily readable on ALL cards, regular and "extra" cards

Mac-compatible baseball game

I want to know why APBA discontinued its computer football game. For me it was the best and only way to replay past seasons, or great teams of the past, etc.

get more individualized pitching in the basic game; pitchers able to stop extra-base hits including realism of homers allowed.

Thomas Nelshoppen

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. ok DonS, you wrote the one about soccer, right? :)

  2. A lot of the comments found above can be found in the Baseball Master Game. I wouldn’t change the game. It has great playability. I would like to see things like all of the World Series Teams published, maybe 20 teams for each decade.

  3. Thank you for publishing all of the comments. This is the kind of feedback the company should want.

    • All of the comments show passion & for the company to engage in this kind of feedback shows the company has that passion as well. I have recently began playing the game again the basic baseball game with my own modifications & am really enjoying it! I’m really excited to see what APBA is going to do with this great feedback.
One last thing, I would love to see more specialty sets;)
      Thanks

  4. When I was younger, I played APBA baseball and football, first and foremost because of the excellent individual cards. Anyone who knew the game could read the player’s profile quickly and accurately from the baseball card. Football cards, however, were far less helpful. Besides the QBs, RBs, and WRs, the rest of the players were just a 1-5 number. My suggetion is that every player, from OT to LB to CB, be rated for/against the Inside Run, Outside Run, Draw, and Short-, Medium-, and Long- passes as the RBs and QBs are. Then a dice roll each play to determine which “key player” card to consult would bring EACH player’s skill to the fore (a simplified PRO FOOTBALL FANTASM style). The formulas for inside or outside run skill, for example would show an LB good at pursuit or plugging holes. The result boards would not change at all, only the column to consult by individual rather than team total defense. The football cards on non-skill position players would come to life as clearly as the baseball cards.

  6. Some of these responses point out how dumb a lot of APBAns are.
