Monster Card Monday: 1992 Domingo Martinez

If a player’s slugging percentage is in four digits, it’s sure to be a winner.  It’s 1992 Domingo Martinez and comes from Howie Mooney.  See, Howie and I are both attending Doug Schuyler’s Chicagoland Summer Fantasy World Series tournament next month.  Howie is bringing the 1992 Toronto Blue Jays and this monster card is on his squad.

Howie saw George Puccinelli’s card on my 1930 St. Louis Cardinals tournament team and he inquired about the use of J-4 players in Doug’s tournament.  Looking at Martinez’ card, I can see why he asked!

Honestly, I can’t remember Domingo when he played for the Jays.  If you don’t either, I wouldn’t be surprised. He only played 15 games over two years (1992-93).  Martinez gave his all for his limited play in 1992 though.  He went 5 for 8 with one homer in seven games and one start.

Ok, four ones.  That means he has a one chance in nine to jack it.

If he doesn’t do that, he has eight 7s.  That’s an automatic hit against ANY pitcher in almost any base situation.

This should be a Weird Card Wednesday too for a couple of reasons.  One, he has three 9s.  Two, he has nine 24s (including crazy places like 32 and 52) however according to Baseball Reference, Martinez did not hit into a double play.  Finally, he has four hit numbers in a row (61-9, 62-8, 63-8 and 64-8).

But probably the strangest thing about Domingo Martinez card is his lack of “conventional” out numbers.  Aside from the double play numbers, he has no ground out numbers (26-29).  He also has no fly out numbers (30-32) on his card.

Fun numbers: 22-1, 33-1, 42-7

I’ve been in contact with Howie for probably over a year now but I’ll get to meet him in person for the first time next month.  I’m looking forward to it!

Oh, if you’re wondering, a J-4 player CAN play in the Chicago tournament but they cannot enter the game till after the fifth inning.  Sounds like Puccinelli and Martinez may be making some pinch hitting appearances!!
