Monster Card Monday: 1981 Mickey Klutts

This is the second 1981 Monster Card in as many weeks but I couldn’t resist. Courtesy of Scott Fennessy, it’s Mickey Klutts’ 1981 APBA card and from the look of it, it is an XB card still unperforated from the stack.

Purists may scoff as Mickey Klutts was not a star. In fact, he only batted 48 times in 1981. However, Klutts has been a repeated request for Monster Monday. Thanks to Scott, I can deliver.

In 1981, Klutts went 17 for 46 and hit five homeruns for Oakland. He walked twice and struck out nine times.

His stat line was .370/.396/.696

Klutts has Ruthian power numbers on his APBA card sans the 5s and 6s. In other words, he has 1-1-1.

It doesn’t stop there. Klutts has a total of five 7s all the way to 25. He also has four 8s to go with his two 9s. Interestingly, APBA put one of his 8s at 61 and gave him a 42-9.

APBA gave Mickey two 14s and six 13s. That was probably a boatload of 13s back in 1981 but by today’s standards, not so much. Fortunately for any Klutts rollers, one 13 was at 41. No 24s for Klutts!

For what it’s worth, Mickey was a 3B-4. Mickey wasn’t a Klutts with the glove!

For his eight-year career, Mickey Klutts hit a total of 14 homeruns in 536 at-bats. Yet over a span of three months, he was Babe Ruth.

thanks again, Scott!

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
