APBA in the News: USA Today article on simulation baseball

The USA Today posted an article today looking at simulation baseball.  The implication, I think, was this was an alternative to the more widely known “fantasy baseball” phenomenon.

The impetus behind the article was Strat-o-matic’s 50th anniversary celebration which it covers in detail.  However, author Steve Gardner did due diligence and mentions APBA as well as Diamond Mind Baseball.

It was good to see some good press for simulation and tabletop baseball.  It was, however, a bit disheartening toward the end when the article morphed into an advertisement for Dynasty League Baseball which is a subsidy of USA Today.  At least they disclosed as much.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. Ya, that was a bit annoying. Dynasty League *is* a great game, though. I’ve played a lot of DL, APBA, and Strat, and all things considered, I think DL has the best game play. The problems, for me, are (1) small community of players, (2) few published seasons, (3) doesn’t offer individual teams for sale, (4) expensive.

Anyhow, to any of your followers, I would heartily recommend signing up for the online trial version. I’ve done it before and they are doing a great job with their site. (When it comes to PC play, I am a big Diamond Mind advocate, even if there are some bad things going on since Tom Tippett left…) The site may be slightly confusing for those not familiar with how DL works, but you should be able to pick it up fairly quickly.

Anyhow, give it a try. I think baseball simmers will enjoy it.

  2. I’ve never played DM but have heard good things about it. Never heard much about DL one way or another.

  3. I second the remarks about Diamond Mind. Also…look into Koch’s Action!Baseball, Football, etc.
