1905 Chicago Cubs replay update: Weimer and Young have another classic duel

The Cubs long east coast swing continues as they arrived in Boston early yesterday and look for a real scrum today as Jake Weimer and Irv Young match up for the third time this season. Weimer won both games by very small margins. Young has been having a stellar season on an awful Braves team, but he did eke out a victory over Mordecai Brown last time in Chicago. That said, Weimer is easily the hottest pitcher in the sport right now averaging about 4 hits a game and the surging Cubs have really closed the gap on the Giants.

Frank Chance has made a major lineup change, and with more possible as he looks to find some sort of output from his dormant offense. Art Hofman in for the badly slumping Jimmy Slagle in left and Hans Lobert for the equally struggling Joe Tinker.

Just as I expected, this became an instant pitcher’s duel. Neither team could amount any offense at all. The Cubs had a chance with a leadoff double by Lobert in the third and did not score, and the Braves missed their only opportunity in the second with a leadoff triple by the suddenly hot Jim Delahanty, but he was instantly wiped out in a double play and the Braves only chance to score was wiped out.

The Cubs scored the only run of the ball game in the 5th when Bill Lauterborn, booted an easy chance at second off the bat of Johnny Kling. Lobert then drilled an RBI double to score him. Lobert has a very weak offensive card, but two of his 8 hits for the season are for extra bases. Young gets hurt by shoddy defense again as the final is Cubs 1 Braves 0. Young tossed a 3 hitter, and Weimer allowed just two hits on way to his 11th shutout of the year, and his 3rd straight.

Around the league

Frank_Owen_baseball_cardCongratulations to Frank Owen of the White Sox on his first career no hitter. It is the third for the pale hose this year as they become the first team to have all members of a rotation throw one. It was the 10th of the year, and the first in over a month, which is the longest all season between no no’s. Lost in the excitement opposing pitcher George Winter of the Red Sox was slightly injured and will miss 2 starts.

The Cardinals are on the move with a new look lineup and are threatening to catch the Phillies for 4th. Left for dead a month ago, numerous lineup changes, combined with Mike Grady and the red hot Homer Smoot and Jake Beckley have really paid off. Unfortunately Beckley will be out for about a week with a mild ankle sprain.

  1. Nice update as usual Scott….can see Weimer and Young hook up again in a classic dead ball game. Season may be decided in a single game with plays made or not made by role players like lauterborn and lobert….yip Owen had good year for pale hose in 1906 as well…

    • Hi Gary,

Yes indeed it really will come down to the wire in both leagues. White Sox getting some serious heat from Cleveland, and the A’s keep hanging around too.
