1905 Chicago Cubs replay update: Lifeless Cubs cooled off by Frosty Bill

dugglebyThe Cubs play the Phillies in the series finale. Bill Duggleby and Jake Weimer face each other in what should be a great pitchers duel. Duggleby are two of the best in the NL, and although “Frosty Bill’s” numbers are not in the same level as Jake’s, they may be more impressive as the Phillies are barely at .500 and have had a tough year defensively.

As expected both pitchers allow nothing in the first inning, but things take a turn for the worse in the second with two out and the light hitting Red Dooin drops a single to center in front of Billy Maloney. Otto Krueger, who is getting a rare start today to spell Mike Doolan at short gets a hit and run single and the pitcher due up. Duggleby is not a great hitter, but not an automatic out, and he gets a hittable fastball and slaps this down the line in right and it’s going to go to the wall. Frank Schulte corrals this one and fires to Johnny Evers, but the relay throw is not in time and Duggleby is in with a two run triple.

Weimer seems unnerved, so Frank Chance comes over to calm his struggling pitcher. Unfortunately it did not work as Sherry Magee drops a single to left that scores Duggleby, and steals second ahead of Johnny Kling’s throw and scores on Bill Gleason’s RBI single. John Titus pops up to Art Hofman at third and the inning is mercifully over, but when the Cubs go scoreless in the bottom of the inning the score is now 4-0 Phillies.

Now that the outburst is over, the pitching duel I had imagined happens. Neither team does much of anything, and Duggleby is cruising with a no hitter at the end of six innings and the score remains 4-0 Phillies.

The Phillies get started with a leadoff walk to Krueger in the 7th and it proves to be important as Duggleby gets an infield single putting runners on first and second. Two outs later they are on second and third when John Titus hits a hanging curve hard and deep. Maloney plays the bounce off the wall in right center and Titus has a stand up triple and the two RBI end Weimer’s unusually bad day as Carl Lundgren comes in to get the final out of the inning with the Phillies now leading 6-0.

That was unfortunately all there was to the ball game. Art Hofman broke up the no hitter with a one out single in the 7th and got another hit in the 9th. They were the only hits for the Cubs today. Bob Wicker got a scoreless inning in the ninth which is a good sign as he had not been doing too well lately.

Thankfully the Giants got spanked by the Reds 5-2 today to keep the Cubs at 5 games out. I guess that’s why they call these the “dog days”.

Giants 60 21 .741
Cubs 57 25 .695
Pirates 49 31 .613

  1. Hi Scott,
one thing I like about your articles is what I learn. i looked up Duggleby and found out why he was called ‘Frosty Bill’.

““Frosty” Bill, as he would come to be known for his lack of desire to make friends on the team and the fact that he wore a black suit even in summer”

Apparently, not a friendly guy. :)
