I’m Back!

I know it’s been a while since I’ve published a post for The APBA Blog. For over a year, I produced a Final Card Friday article EVERY week, along with a few other posts. I apologize for my absence. Unfortunately, life frequently gets in the way of APBA. Everything from teaching, traveling, and umpiring high school and collegiate baseball has taken me away from writing.

I plan to continue Final Card Friday, however, it’s not likely to be weekly. Part of my absence was because I joined an APBA league, the World Baseball Organization (WBO). I’m happy to report, I’ve guided the Grand Rapids Holy Harveys to a 93-69 record, a 13 game improvement from the previous year. That resulted in a wildcard playoff spot, which is a 3-game series in our league. I was able to sweep that series against Mike Fallona’s Portland Pilgrims and advance to the Division Championship Series (best of 7). The Division Championship series will start sometime this weekend against Ed Hubbard’s Galveston Grey Ghost. Obviously, the WBO playoffs are a good topic for future posts, along with my first-year experience in the league. Be on the lookout for those posts.

I’ve got a few other ideas for my contributions to The APBA Blog. Previously, I started a series of posts on Triple Crown winners. I plan to continue those in the future. Also, I plan to report on my participation in the two annual APBA tournaments I attend: The Furniture City APBA Tournament and The Greater Michigan APBA Baseball Tournament. The Furniture City tournament is taking place on October 26th. I’m hoping my 1930 New York Giants perform well. Finally, I plan to write an article about using APBA GO to prepare for APBA tournaments and league play. My brother, Kirk, and I have been using the online game to do just that.

Anyway, it’s good to be back. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for blog posts, feel free to send them my way. Until then, keep it rolling.

I’ve been enjoying APBA since 1983. I now enjoy single-team replays and tournaments, and manage a team in the WBO. I’m a high school History & English teacher from Michigan, who also umpires high school and collegiate baseball. Check out the podcast I host with my brother, called Double Take. Also, check out my umpire podcast called, The Hammer - An Umpire Podcast | Twitter: @apbaweber

  1. Mr Weber. If that call in the photo went against my Spartans, I’ll have to say with all due respect, you blew the call! Glad to have you back. But it wasn’t until a couple months ago when I realized I hadn’t seen any posts from you. Out of curiosity, what format of the game does your league use?

  2. Welcome back, Kevin and good luck in the postseason!!

  3. Kevin, I listened to your 2nd Podcast last night and enjoyed it. Your brother Kirk mentioned he may do some interviews of players at regional APBA Tournaments. He may want to start at the Bath City tournament in Mt. Clemons, MI on Nov. 9th. It is close by for him. Stray Carrado has organized a great tournament.
