What program or method do you use to keep stats?

The APBA Blog reader Brad Richards sent in a question:

“I love your blog and have been reading it for a couple of years now.  I was wondering if you know of any computer software to use for scorekeeping/stat keeping.  I have a MacBook and have been looking for someway to score my APBA games and keep track of the statistics.”

I’ll open this up to everyone to comment.  Let us know what you use to keep stats (I’m assuming baseball here but if you have a good stat-keeping method for any of the other APBA sports, chime in).

Before we do, I’ll put my two cents in.  I’m a big Excel freak and I use nifty spreadsheet that was compiled by a couple of managers in the Illowa APBA League.  I wrote full description of it a while ago and it seems to be quite popular.  You can download a template from the IAL website, if you want to try it out.

An added bonus for Brad, as long as you have Excel, there won’t be any Mac compatible issues.

I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

  1. I just started a solitaire replay of the basic version 2007 season and have not played APBA since the 70’s, but am totally enjoying getting back to this great game.

I am using the excel spreadsheet offered on the APBA website, which is so far…I have only played 35 total games. The only improvements I am making to the spreadsheet are adding Blown Saves and Holds to the pitching categories. I may add WHIP later.

  2. I use Ballscore/Ballstat for my 1916 replay. When you input the scoresheet you can update any and all stats with two mouse clicks.

  3. I know that I am probably the minority here, but I do all of my stats the old fashioned way with a pencil and paper. I think this is because I am not computer savy and when I started playing in the early ’90’s we didn’t have all of this technology and there really was no other way of keeping stats. I remember being a kid and my dad showing me his “stat books” from when he played as a child and the book just looked so cool that to me the main method of choice has always been paper and pencil (calculator too!!).

Needless to say, I just track basic stats
    Batters: AB-H-AVG.-HR-RBI-2BH-3BH-SB-R-BB
    Pitchers: W-L-SV-ND-K-BB-IP-ER-E.R.A.-BS-G-GS

I’ve considered updating my method, but I enjoy it too much…….and to think that math was my worst subject growing up!!!

  4. Hello everyone. I am currently developing software to keep score of Stratomatic games, but it would also work with APBA. The application will be available on iOS and as a website. The games are kept score by clicking a button with the outcome of the play. You can import rosters, view stats, and manage your team. All you need to do is enter in the outcome, and the rest is automatic. If you are interested please contact me at mikerios483 (at) gmail (dot) com
