Rose selling the APBA Journal

Francis Rose is selling the APBA Journal.

Citing lack of time to devote to it, entrepreneur Francis Rose is attempting to unload the periodical dedicated the game of APBA.  AJ, which has been around since I was kid, was a great resource for those who played in leagues as well as solitaire replays.

I credit the APBA Journal for getting me into my current league, the Illowa APBA League.  Back when we didn’t have the Internet, email, or online forums, we had the APBA Journal Directory.  It was an annual directory opt-in list of APBA players that came out in the APBA Journal.  The IAL saw my name and cold-called me.  The person that called me??  Teddy Ballgame.

That all said, the APBA Journal has pretty much been a shell of its former self recently.  The few times I’ve been to it recently, I didn’t really get much out it.  I missed the days that Eric Naftaly edited it.

According to Rose, here is what’s available for sale if you want to make a go of bringing the APBA Journal back to its former glory:

1) the only known collection of original copies of the AJ – from the very first issue in 1967
2) almost every AJ from 1969 through 1980 in digital format (either JPGs or PDFs)
3) hard copies of all the reference packs sold by the former owner of the AJ
4) unlimited publication rights to all AJ content
5) contact information for customers with a history of purchasing Journal-related products
6) internet domain-name rights for several related web sites

Sound good?  Give a go!

Did the Journal get sold eventually? I haven’t played APBA since ’84 or ’85, and honestly didn’t know the AJ was still around.

  • Blake says:

Is the APBA Journal still being published? I have played APBA since 1975 and I am getting back into it after a long time. I still have my old sets and game boards. I also have a bunch of Jouranals from the late 80′s but cant find any active info on the web about the APBA Journal. Would like to subscribe if it’s still around…. thanks.

  • it’s my impression (and other can correct me if I’m wrong), that the AJ is no longer being produced.

in fact, no one even owns the domain name apbajournal.com right now.

Francis Rose has offered to sell past versions of the AJ in ebook format a couple years ago. I don’t know if that still stands. I may look into it.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t have any luck with the apbacards.com site either. I hope to FINALLY finish that 1975 basic game replay someday.. where would I publish my results now so that others can see it and comment? I loved tha APBAalone replay section of the AJ…

  • First, you can always send me a summary (tbz@apbablog.com) and I would be happy to post about it on the APBA Blog.

Also, there is a Replays section on the APBA Between the Lines forum filled with people posting updates on their replays.

    here is the link:

Thanks for the info on the APBA forum! I had not stumbled across it yet. I am planning to start a 1975 Basic Game replay and trying to get info on re-grading pitchers to eliminate downgrades/upgrades for IP. I was hoping to get the info from the AJ. I don’t want to hijack this thread, but do you have any info on grading pitchers that you, or other members, would care to share? Maybe a new thread? Thanks again!

  • Steve Stein says:

Blake, if you’re looking to regrade pitchers, try the CMBA grading system. There’s a CMBA grade calculator in the package at:
    http://www.makojo.com/baseball.html

  • Blake says:

Thanks Steve. It looks like I need the BBW data disk to use this calculator, correct? I only have the cards…

  • Steve Stein says:

    Blake, you can try this:
    http://tblhome.com/TBL-pitching-grade-computer.xls

That’s the TBL pitcher grade computer. Read the User’s Guide tab – that will tell you how to use it. Use something like Baseball Reference to get the pitching stats for the year you want to use.

The TBL grading system is a Master Game add-on, not Basic – it uses Master Game grades (1-30) and control and HR ratings that use dice rolls to determine whether a walk is stolen (for positive control ratings on result 14) or given (for negative control ratings on results 12 and 35); and whether a HR is converted to a double (for positive HR ratings) or vice-versa (for negative HR ratings).

  • Blake says:

    Steve,
Thanks for the info! I have been away from the computer the past few days but I will certainly check out that grading system and let you know how it goes. Thnaks again.

  • Joe Cullinan says:

    I have APBA journals 1991 – 1997
    looking for good home.

    Yours for the taking

  • Blake says:

    Joe,
Thank you very much! I would love to get those journals! Let me know the logistics and I will make it happen! That is just about the time where mine left off! email blakedel at embarqmail dot com.

  • Derrick says:

Read the AJ from 1971 to about 1983. After that, what is the history? I think Howard Ahlskog (?) ran it (after Ben Weiser and the Gaydos bros.). Who took over after Howard, and did modern technology (computer) injure the AJ? Still think there would be a market, albeit much smaller.
