The Cubs face the Phillies in Game two of their double header. In New York the Giants swept the Reds in their double header. This time in a thrilling 3-2 contest that saw George Wiltse pick up his 20th victory. Mordecai Brown faces off against Tully Sparks in the second half of the twin bill.

Pitching dominates this game as neither team can mount anything resembling an offensive attack. The Cubs had a chance in the second with runners on first and second with no outs, but Sparks works out of danger to keep the scoreless game intact.

It was not until a leadoff grounder by Billy Maloney Clanked off of Otto Krueger’s glove in the seventh inning that this one was decided. Maloney then steals his 54TH base of the season and still on second with one out when Frank Schulte rips a ball just past Bill Bransfield and this rolls down the line. Hugh Duffy picks it up and fires it in to Bill Gleason at second, but Schulte is in safely with an RBI double. This gives him a 4 game hitting streak, which should help take some pressure off of Frank Chance.

And that was the entire ballgame. Both pitchers threw three hitters in route to Brown picking up his 7th shutout win of the year and his 21st victory of the year, keeping the Cubs ½ game behind the Giants.
