Losing 15 games in six hours

The APBA Gods must be angry with me.

While the the APBA fans are having a grand time in Lancaster at the 2011 Convention, my Twin City Thunderchickens simply had the worst day in its history.  Oh I had fun, no doubt.  But within six hours, my team managed to lose fifteen games.

DonS came down to Champaign-Urbana to knock out two nine-game series against fellow manager Brando and me.  Don won seven of nine on Friday and on Saturday, it was my turn.  But here’s the rub, my Thunderchickens were also playing three and half hours away in a small Illinois hamlet called Colona near the Quad Cities.  I was scheduled to play Marcus Bunch this month and to expedite the playing the series, he enlisted his father Mike (and league commissioner) to pinch-manage my team.  My instructions were sent and as it was, they were going to play at the same time Don and I were.

Down in Champaign, things did not start well.  I scored 8 runs… in the first four games.  Meanwhile, Marcus was texting me with unhappy updates like “Dads dice suck” and chris perez just pulled a marmol. walked 4 and a double”.

By the end of eight games, the result was the same, I had won just one game.  It wasn’t until game 8 till I actually won against Don.  I had won it in extras on a Johnny Buck pinch hit homerun.  Up in Colona, Papa Bunch coaxed a win out of Big John Lackey.  The difference?  The Thunderchickens pulled out another win in the final game with Mike at the helm.

Record for the day: 3-15

I imagine I’ll fall a spot or two in the standings.

Guess I should have gone to Lancaster.

I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as the BBW Boys of Summer APBA League since 2014. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.
