I am an IT consultant by day and an APBA media mogul by night. My passions are baseball (specifically Illini baseball), photography and of course, APBA. I have been fortunate to be part of the basic game Illowa APBA League since 1980 as well as a frequent participant of the Chicagoland APBA Tournament. I am slogging through a 1966 NL replay and hope to finish before I die.

Monster Card Monday: 1883 Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn

Rich Zawadzki suggested this truly monster card. These days when a few pitchers struggle to reach 200 innings in a season (five did in 2023), what Charles Radbourn did in 1883 seems impossible. Yet, the stats bear it out. And indeed make this a monster card.

Have I been calculating earned runs wrong all this time?

Our league, the Illowa APBA League, communicates largely by group text. Topics range greatly but tend to stick to sports, and mostly baseball. This year, it has been a good source of breaking news on who’s injured, traded or DFAed.

Monster Card Monday: 1980 Willie Wilson

Rich Zawadzki helped me out with Monster Monday this week with two cards… of the same player from the same season. Right here, we’re looking at the original 1980 Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals.

Monster Card Monday: 1973 Cesar Cedeno

Pastor Rich helped with this one. I was never aware Cesar Cedeno had such a good card. In his fourth year with Houston, Cedeno had established himself as their centerfielder and a very good one at that.

Check out Don George’s single-season 1927 Cubs replay

Don George is continuing his series of single-team APBA replays. This time, he has replayed the 1927 Chicago Cubs full season. The Cubs finished at 76-77, a few games shy of their real life record in 1927. Slugger Hack Wilson hit .321 with 32 dingers. Here are a few words…

Monster Card Monday: 1908 Sam Crawford

This suggestion of 1908 Sam Crawford comes from Scott Fennessy, I believe. As Ty Cobb’s teammate, Crawford really held his own during his career. His stats are littered with bold marks showing he could best the Georgia Peach. In 1908, Crawford hit .311 and led the AL with seven homeruns.…
