The Cubs begin a home stand with game 1 of today’s doubleheader against the Pirates.
Having returned from a winning trip out east the Cubs return from Pittsburgh, and the Pirates have traveled with them to start a new series in Chicago.

Deacon Phillippe faces Jake Weimer as the red hot Cubs face the stagnant Pirates
Having swept the bucs in Pittsburgh, the mood is great for the home team. No score until the bottom of the second when Philippe gets wild and walks 2 of the first 3 hitters and an infield single by Johnny Kling who is FINALLY starting to show signs of life loads the bases. Backup catcher Heiney Pietz then misses the pitch for a run scoring passed ball, but Lobert who has seen more play due to Doc Casey’s struggles walks again to reload them. Weimer hits a fly to right scoring Schulte and the inning ends 0-2 Cubs on top. Again nothing until the 4th when Phillippe, who is normally a sure thing on the mound unravels again. Wildfire Schulte now has a 3 game hit streak is off to the races, and scores on Kling’s towering homer to center. Two outs later Maloney and Evers strike again and the inning ends 0-5 Cubs.
Weimer is still throwing bullets and the score is the same when Evers sparks a two out rally with a double, scoring on Art Hofman’s Single. This mercifully ends Deacon’s day and the bullpen holds strong for the bucs. Pittsburg finally scores with two out in the 7th with a double by Hillenbrand and a triple by Tom Leach, but the damage is long since done and the game ends 1-6 Cubs winning.
Not much to say about this one as the Cubs roughed up the Pirates pretty handily on this. 6 of the 8 position players got hits and 7 of them reached base. Only the still struggling Tinker missed on the fun. In addition to going 2 for 3 Kling steals a base too. I think he and Schulte are starting to play more to their cards, and if the Giants lose today they move into first.
