Dear APBA Blog,
                      I have been playing APBA Baseball since I was probably 7 years old. My dad passed it along to me and I have never grown bored or tired of the basic game and love just tossing the dice. I like to play my teams from blind drafts and have had as many 12 teams in a league. The problem I face is that every time I want to add teams I can never get my schedule right. Is there a website that I can go to or can you guys pass along schedules via email?

I’m assuming Shawn is talking about creating schedules that somewhat reflect MLB’s style but with the number of teams that the APBA replayer has chosen to use for his replay.  A tricky endeavor in cases indeed.  I’ve had this problem in the past myself.

One solution out there (which sadly was not available when I needed it) is a freely downloadable program aptly called Schedule Generator.  It’s in version 1.0.8 right now. 

I’ve never used it for a replay myself but I did just download it and gave it a couple schedule tests to see how it works.  After a few tests, it seems to work fine with a few minor bugs which have workarounds.

The Schedule Generator allows up to 40 teams, two leagues with three divisions.  You can choose the amount of games, a balanced or unbalanced schedule and interleague play and even insert an All-Star break. 

SG outputs into a neat text file which can also be imported into Excel for further manipulation and editing (the program seems to be geared towards those who play Out of the Park, a text-based simulation baseball game as it generates a data file for the game as well). 

I did get an I/O error at times but deleting the existing schedule file from before fixed that. 

You can download the Schedule Generator from Cnet’s download site for free.

This may or may not work for Shawn.  Twelve teams in a league might be tricky but if he puts them in two divisions and chooses “Balanced”, it might work. 

There are more schedule programs out there and probably other ways to generate schedules.  If you know of any or have solutions that work for you, please let us know.

It wasn’t too long ago when Mike completed his 1968 season replay.  He went right ahead and took on 1961.  He just emailed our league with the results. 

Say what you want about Mike but he keeps accurate and detailed stats.  Safe to say, what I’m showing below is an inkling of what he showed us. 

On to the results… first thing I noticed was Roger Maris.  He hit 61 on the nose.  The Giants’ Orlando Cepeda did him one better in the National League though.  That and his league leading 166 rbis makes him the NL MVP, says Mike.

On the AL side, Mike gives the MVP to Norm Cash who led the league in batting (.386) and runs scored (144), and OBP (.512). 

Mike has also deemed Mike McCormick and Whitey Ford the Cy Young Award winners.

Who’s on your ballot?

Mike will be playing the Giants-Tigers World Series soon.  I’m looking forward to an update!

APBA Baseball Replays also has seems to have a pretty good handle on topics relating to Baseball for Windows (BBW) something I could tell you very little (being a dice and boards person).

The date in the replay was 5/24/59 and after the Braves scored 1 run in the 11 th inning, Wally Post singling home Ed Bouchee to give the Phils a 5-4 extra inning victory.

Former or was it future Celtic Gene Conley (3-0) went all 11 innings for the now memorable and long ago win besting Lew Burdette (5-2). This gave the Phils an 11-26 record in the replay- no great shakes certainly but it was to get even worse.

The Phils were to go 13 months without another triumph. Admittedly I wasn’t rolling as often as other dynamic replayers do but the Phillies did manage to drop 12 straight games before former NY Giant Reuben (D) Gomez stepped up and pitched a 9 inning shutout to beat Jim Brosnan and the St. Louis Cards 6-0. Gomez got his first win on the season to go to 1-5. He came into the game with a nifty 8.00 ERA! This pushed the Phils ledger all the way up to 12-38 or a nifty .240 winning percentage.

Oh by the way the date on the ’59 calendar is 6/7/59. The date in the real world is 1/17/09- thus this victory was 13 plus months in the making.

Certainly some record of dubious distinction.

Let’s see if they can go for the sweep in game 2 of the doubleheader- scheduled to be played sometime soon.

I was re-organizing my photo gallery this afternoon and I ran across some photos from the 2002 APBA Convention.  I remember this trip fondly.  My buddy Brando and I drove out to Lancaster for the convention.  On the way and on way back we saw some minor league games.  The home teams we saw were the Indianapolis Indians, Reading Phillies, Harrisburg Senators plus the big league Pittsburgh Pirates. 

Plus we got some APBA played.  We were in the middle of our 1979 NL replay and we took time out at roadside parks to play a series or two. 

heh, then there was the tournament at the APBA convention.  I had the Milwaukee Braves of ’65 I believe.  I remember thinking that Joe Torre and his APBA smarts would bring me luck. 

Nope, Eric Naftaly and his ’59 Giants took care of me pretty well in the first round.

Then just yesterday I ran across a link for Mark Miller’s Baseball Goodies web site.  And lo and behold, that website certainly does deliver for the APBA baseball replayer!  With the help of Retrosheet, Miller has been able to glean valuable info that is helpful for anyone who wants to simulate an accurate replay.  His site includes:

  • Rosters (both opening days and complete)
  • “as-played” lineup files
  • transaction lists

On top of that he includes “Auto-play” excel files which aid in replaying seasons.  In Miller’s words:

Use Auto-Play to determine winners and losers for as-played and as-scheduled schedules.  You can roll some games and let Auto-Play play the others.  You have the option of using actual results or Log5 method to determine who wins.

Mark Miller’s Baseball Goodies is definitely worth a look for anyone who is into APBA replays.
