2008 APBA Card Error: Willie Bloomquist

correctbloomquist

The correct Willie Bloomquist card

With every APBA card set, us APBA fans find anomalies and strangeness and wonder, “Will APBA correct this on their error list?”.

So far with the 2008 baseball card set, APBA hasn’t corrected any cards with the exception of one… Seattle Mariner Willie Bloomquist.

The official message from the APBA Game Co:

We just wanted to report that we have found one card error on the current season baseball card set for 2008. The card for William Bloomquist.  On 51 it currently reads 9 – 1.  This should read 9 – 11.

The error seems to appear on the cards but not on disk.

It’s a small difference on a relatively low impact player but it’s good to know.

League Profile: Mid-West Baseball League

straightup

Ok, here’s a league with a grade A website.  The Mid-West Baseball League, mostly based out of the US Midwest, has one of the most complete and flashiest web sites I’ve seen for an APBA league.

The MWBL league database goes back to 1997.  They’ve documented their stats, awards, league leaders, everything.  Very impressive.

League Name

Mid-West Baseball League
Contact Person Stray Corrado
Sport Baseball
League Web Site http://www.straybaseball.com/mwbl
Basic/Master/Computer/
Combination
Computer
Geographic location US Midwest

Stray writes:

We draft up to 12 UnCarded prospects from anywhere in Baseball. You really need to check this league out.

If you want to brag about your league, we’re listening!  Tell us all about the league you are in and we’ll post a profile about it.

In the meantime, read about other leagues who have written in.

I get a grade A request

Tim from Chicago sent me an email today saying he’s going to be in a tournament using seasons from 1975-2008.  Long story short, he’d like to know if there is a database or listing of grade A pitchers by year.

I’m pretty sure the Ed Zack book documents this but does this kind of info exist on the web?

I’m sure Tim would appreciate any info.

APBA Card "Who am I?"

whoami1-15

Here’s something to get you thinking.  Name the player and year this card belongs to.  I’ve blanked out the name, birth date and birthplace.

I’ll give you no hints yet other than that this player is a starter and you have most likely know who he his.

No doubt, seasoned APBAphiles out there will be able to narrow down the year with the help of the placement of the “12″ plus the font of the card.

Good luck!

Some past APBA mentions in the press

Opening Day won’t be here for another three months but since the 2008 cards and disks are out, APBA league play and replays can now commence.

In that spirit, here are links to some past (dare I call them historical?) articles on the game of APBA in the mainstream press.  Thanks to Teddy Ballgame (who must have been busy on Google) who passed them on to me.

APBA’s Baseball Game Keeps Getting Better

by H.P. Rosenberg of metbaseball.com.  From September 2007, published on the Flushing University website and includes an interview with APBA Game Company’s Marc Rinaldi and Veryl Lincoln

Take Me Out To the Board Game:  For APBA and Strat-O-Matic, the combination of baseball and statistics is one of the sweetest things on Earth

from August 2001 by Bob Herzog of New York Newsday and republished on APBA’s website.

and this one goes waaay back:

Apba Is The Name, Baseball Is The Game, And Obsession Is The Result

from 1980 by Franz Lidz of Sports Illustrated.  Yes, this is from the Seitz era.

Seitz, who originated the formulas used to make up the player cards, is a fallible god. “Customers write in to argue about performance ratings,” he says. “They take it personally. They think they know more about the game than I do.” The letters go unanswered.

Enjoy!

I GOT THE NEW CARDS!!!

burkeThis was the best day ever!!!  “I GOT THE NEW CARDS!”, used to generate excitement.  NOTE: I’ve included utility man Chris Burke’s card as proof, nobody, to my knowledge, has posted his, who cares, card.  I remember getting together with friends, for an extended lunch at a local restaurant, to look at the new cards.  Whoever got the cards first would call the others and quick arrangements would be made to get together.  Out of town managers would call me on the phone, I’d patiently tell them, nope he didn’t get a B, sometimes patiently for the 3rd time.  There was even a time when people would drive to Lancaster, the APBA Mecca, to get the cards, hot off the press.  While we never went to that extreme, I can remember ordering through the Newton Lumber Company in Ohio, somebody from there drove to Lancaster, picked up orders, and shipped them out quicker than the APBA Game company could.  We’d even pay $25 for an express shipping, to get them one or two days sooner.  I remember even splitting up my order, because getting just the cards, would get them to me quicker, and then I’d place another order for just the XBs (the extra six to ten players per team).  In addition to seeing what each player got for hitting cards, and pitching & fielding ratings, it was also the first time we’d know which players were carded.  Sometimes a late season trade would mean a player would not get a card, even though he’d played alot.  Oh, YEAH BABY, this was like your birthday & Christmas, all rolled into one!  There was not a better day!

But that was then, this is now.  Things change, not necessarily for the better.  I got the cards six days ago.  I put the XBs onto their appropriate teams, no more tearing apart perforated cards, they’re not printed in black to be cut apart (for the really old timers), they look like any other cards.  The team envelopes now say, Junior & Senior Circuit, rather than American & National League, and there are no team names, only cities, because of some type of MLB licensing agreement.  There the new cards sit, on my desk, in their team envelopes, we get a “league” set of cards used for official Illowa APBA League play, so these cards will never be used.  Now a days, in this overnight, computer world, information is much more hard to keep under wraps.  First of all, there are the predictions.  Then there is an online chat, where all the numbers & grades are posted, this was done long before I got the cards!

But I still order the new cards because I believe my buying a set helps the APBA Game Company.  And even though I know the stuff printed on the cards from checking my computer screen, I still get a thrill when the mailman comes, and I can yell, “I GOT THE NEW CARDS!”

APBA Card of the Week: 08 Carlos Zambrano

zambrano08

For any NL-rule APBA leagues out there, yum!  If you can avoid those five 24s on this card, he’s got quite a tasty card.

It’s not a fluke either.  Zambrano won the NL Silver Slugger award for a reason.  He led all ML pitchers in pretty much every offensive stat in ’08.

And for leagues that allow it, Zambrano can pinch hit, too.  He had a few actual pinch hit at-bats in 2008.

The owner of Zambrano in our league also has Livian Hernandez and Jason Marquis so for the past few years it’s pretty much like having a 9th hitter in the lineup.  Not a small matter, when you consider that pinch hitting is not an issue for him.
