An OFAS Sweet 16 Tournament

Nothing better to get you through the cold winter than a good ol’ fashioned sweet 16 baseball tournament using the Original Franchise All Stars set.  And that’s exactly what Gene Carney did.  He blogs in depth about his final series between the NL champs Chicago Cubs and the AL champions Detroit Tigers on the baseball site seamheads.com.

Scroll down a bit on the page and you’ll see some of the modifications he made to APBA’s pitching system to compensate for the super hitting lineups in his tournament.

Next up for Gene:  a deadball vs sluggers tournament.

Greg Maddux Announces Retirement

I drafted Greg Maddux based on a D-Y card he earned with the Chicago Cubs based on his 1987 season.  It turned out to be one of the best picks I’ve ever made.  I needed Maddux to make 42 starts (we allow D’s to double their limits) in his first IAL campaign, 4-15 & a 6.83 ERA were the ugly results.  Things quickly turned around for Batboy, after 20 seasons with the Champions his record was 320-214 with a 3.53 lifetime ERA.  Greg never would be a D again, the new cards are out, C-Z for Mr. Maddux.

He won 20 or more games starting in 1992 through 1996, with a career best, 23 wins in 1995.  Known for his outstanding control, in 1997, he only issued 13 bases on balls in 245 innings of work.  A 1.96 ERA was his best, posted in 1993.  You might think all of this talk about the 90s is ancient history, but Maddux won 21 games with the 2001 Champs.  Just to prove he’s not done, he was 15-6 in 2007 and already has 14 wins, with 18 games to go in the 2008 season.  Then Maddux will have one more year of competing in the IAL.

Originally the Champions had a tentative trade worked out with the Northside Hitmen, sending A.J. Burnett & Brett Myers in exchange for Ryan Doumit, but then Myers was rated a D.  Then the Champs reformatted the deal to send Matt Cain, Boof Bonser, & Miguel Olivo for Doumit, Matt Lindstrom, & Edgar Renteria.  Now with Maddux announcing his retirement, will the Champs be able to still trade pitching?  Do they still have “extra” pitching?

That dang 12

Just a real quick note on the 12.  It seems to be on the 24 this year.  Which, I guess is not too bad a place for it.  It’s better than a “good” number like 64 or worse, 42.  And at least it’s not on an automatic number like 65 or I don’t know… 29.  Geez, I was calling 1-3 on that number all year.

I hear people every so often complain about APBA moving the 12 around the APBA card.  I guess their argument is that it’s easier to remember on one number and sometimes it resides on some nice dice rolls.

Not me.  Maybe I’m a traditionalist but I think it’s a APBA tradition and “part of the fun” and anticipation of where the company will place it.  Judging by the poll (out of 18 responses, everyone single voter likes it the way it is), you agree.

2008 APBA Cards: Who got a gift and who got shafted?

This is a precarious time for APBA baseball fans.  On the APBA forums, precious few have the magic information (card ratings) we all crave.  There is little else we all gain from this info other than curiosity since we will all see these cards at some point soon.  That doesn’t prevent us (me included) from desperately (admittedly, some more desperate than others) seeking numbers on certain players, most likely players on our teams (dang, Glavine is a D).

With all that said and a good number of pitchers grades in as well as a lot of the defensive ratings, let’s take a look at who got a gift and who got the shaft from the guys in Lancaster.

Who got a gift?

Let’s start out with some defensive ratings.  Some opined that Lance Berkman was lucky to get a 1B-5 rating for his glove.  I tend to agree.  That was a jump up from his 1B-4 rating last year.  Perhaps a boost from his hitting numbers?  Sounds illogical but I wouldn’t be surprised.

A couple other defensive gifts were Carlos Lee and Justin Upton who were both OF-2.  Lee’s rating was a point higher than last year’s. Upton just lucky two years in a row.

Like Berkman, Ryan Braun may have benefited defensively from a good offensive year.  His OF-1 last year turned into an OF-2 this year.

Some were surprised by Felix Pie’s OF-3.  As a Cub fan, I’m not sure what to think.  I mean it IS the only thing he could right in 2008.

But the ultimate gift, the one rating that most people agreed was egregious, was Edison Volquez’ grade of 16xyw.

Here are Volquez’ stats:

W L G GS CG SHO GF SV IP H R ER HR BB SO ERA
17 6 33 32 0 0 1 0 196 167 82 70 14 93 206 3.21

With these numbers, Edison pulling off an A is quite a coup.  As an added bonus, Volquez is in our rookie draft.  *must not be tempted… must keep focused*

Who got shafted?

Getting an unexpected good grade or rating on a player on your team is real nice but nothing is more anguishing than having a player (or worse, pitcher) not get that expected grade but rather something worse.

Now some in the forums were surprised at Scott Rolen’s 3B-4.  I wasn’t.  I think Scotty’s days with the golden glove are in the past and his 4 is probably warranted.

However, Carlos Quentin and Delmon Young both got OF-1 ratings and I know that a few people out there who think they deserved better.

Teddy Ballgame says the same about secondbaseman Felipe Lopez who got a lowly 2B-6.  TB opines, if he’s a 6, then so is Dan Uggla.  Let’s put Uggla in the gift category then.

Michael Young gets a SS-9.  Really?

Some have mentioned Carlos Zambrano deserved better than a 8.  As a Cub fan, nothing would please me more than to nudge Big Z into the B territory.  But his last start in 2008 when he gave up 5 runs pushed him over the edge.  With a 3.91 ERA and 14 wins, I just don’t see it.

The biggest shaft this year?  No doubt it’s Matt Capps and his 9z.  It’s very possible that Capps will get a zz rating and most likely that affected his rating (just as Volquez’ w rating may have affected his).  But still, Capps’ ERA of 3.02 is dang low for a basic game C.  Here are Matt Capps’ stats:

W L G GS CG SHO GF SV IP H R ER HR BB SO ERA
2 3 49 0 0 0 39 21 53.7 47 20 18 5 5 39 3.02

A short term reliever isn’t going to make or break any APBA league team but nonetheless Capps’ 9 rating seems to be the widest gap in APBA’s formula.

The hitting numbers have been few and far between so far (though I did get my Albert Pujols’ 1-1-0-0-0-7-8-8-8-8-9-9, 5 14, (1B-5)(2B-5), yum!).  Others are starting to come through, too.

Did you notice any player or pitcher who didn’t get a rating you expected?  Let us know in the comment section.

Thanks to Teddy Ballgame for his help with this article.

Between the Lines is abuzz with card info

There’s lots of good 2008 card numbers coming out of the Between the Lines forum (well, good may be a relative term.  I guess it depends on who you have on your team).

if you want a sneak preview on the 2008 season cards, check out this thread.

Haha, I wonder how many people will pinch hit for Carlos Zambrano.

Zambrano 1-4-5-5-7-7-7

more later, as I digest all data coming in…

The APBA Pitching grades in excel format

Just to make it easier for me to digest, I imported the pitching grades that Bruce Norlander posted to Between the Lines into Excel.  Makes it easier to sort and filter by grades, teams etc.

Here is the file if you want it.

Keep in mind that while most are listed, not all pitchers are included.

FELIPE’S A CHAMPION

Backed into a corner the Chicago Champions traded Vernon Wells to the Upperdeckers in exchange for Felipe Lopez.  Ever since I first got into the Illowa APBA League nearly 35 years ago, secondbase has always seemed to be a problem spot.  We started off with Rennie Stennett, went to Jorge Orta, Bobby Randall, Johnny Ray, Bump Wills, Ron Oester, Quilvio Veras, & Josh Barfield.  We also had Joe Morgan & Lou Whitaker, both at the end of their careers.  The only quality secondsacker in the history of the club has been steroid-meister Bret Boone.

When I drafted Josh Barfield, Howie Kendrick had just been taken, I didn’t want to miss out on Barfield and get stuck with either Ian Kinsler or Dan Uggla.  I remember having a discussion with a writer for Baseball America, while at the Arizona Fall League.  He told me, “Kinsler’d be a utility infielder and Uggla couldn’t field well enough to handle the keystone spot in the majors”.  Then I ran into a bartender at Hi-Tops in Pittsburgh who showed me a picture of the guy she was sleeping with, passed out in her apartment, it was Dan Uggla.  So I drafted Josh, which is kind of how I ended up having to trade the now healthy outfielder Vernon Wells for the scrappy, at best, Felipe Lopez.  Did I tell you I’d traded Lance Berkman to get Wells?  Good thing we’ve got Justin Morneau at firstbase.

In fact the Chicago Champions are pretty much set every place, other than secondbase, with Morneau at 1B, SS Jimmy Rollins, ARod at third, Victor Martinez behind the plate, and an outfield of Carlos Lee, Grady Sizemore, & B.J. Upton.  Our rotation is so loaded with quality arms that we may trade a couple, Tim Lincecum, Mark Buehrle, Josh Beckett, Matt Cain, Greg Maddux, A.J. Burnett, & Brett Myers.  Burnett & Myers might be dealt along with backup catcher Miguel Olivo to the Northside Hitmen for catcher Ryan Doumit, who’ll fill in nicely for injured Martinez behind the plate, reliever Jon Rauch, and SS Edgar Renteria.  Rauch would join Matt Capps & Jose Valverde, along with a couple of rookies, in the pen.

Without any viable secondbase candidates in the rookie draft, the Champs were forced to trade for Lopez, while the Upperdeckers were more than eager to add Wells to a lineup that already features batting champs Chipper Jones & Joe Mauer, not to mention Carlos Quentin.

We are currently in first place, trying to reach the 100 win plateau for the first time in franchise history, along with our tenth championship (haven’t won in over 10 years).  These trades will not take place until after the season is over, as there is no in-season trading.

What happened to the first half?

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I was able to squeeze in a nine game series for our Illowa APBA League against Marcus Bunch and his Moline Upperdeckers.  I won five of the nine games.  It was a hard fought series as five of the games were one-run games.

I’ve been on a undefeated streak lately in our league.  You see, I haven’t lost a series since June (we play 6 and 9-game series).

With all of that, I have JUST NOW moved out of last place and moved into ninth place in the IAL.  Whether I stay there is questionable… I’m clinging there by just a game.  This is what happens your team starts out the season with a 17-52 record.

Other news from the Upperdecker series… Albert Pujols hit two home runs for the series.  That gives him 300 IAL career home runs.  If he hits three more in the remaining 18 games, he’ll hit 40 for the year which will give him 40+ home runs for all seven years he’s been in our league.
